I am about to order a new notebook. I can upgrade to a Blu-ray burner for about $150 bucks. Can I use this to rip and burn copies of my Blu-ray disks? My kids are kind of rough on audio and video disk. With the cost of Blu-rays I would like to be able to keep my originals put away. If the answer is yes, what kind of quality can I expect from the copies? Thanks for any input here.

grey area, many countries allow duplicates to be made for the consumers use and personal backup. although with all the new laws being passed and changed its becoming a pain to fugure out what you can and can not do with your purchased disks anymore.

to the OP well if you do a google search there are commercial products that claim to do it .... and I will leave it at that because I have no ideas of legalities in your region

Yea... HUGE grey area. Some places do allow copies, but it involves getting software to circumvent Blu-Ray DRM protection and that kind of conversation isn't allowed here.

I didn't even think about the legal aspect. I suppose because I have no intent to prosper from the copies. Anyway, sounds like it may be more trouble than it is worth. Thanks guys.
