Do you think I will be able to tell noticeable difference when watching Blu-ray movies at 1920x1080 as distinct from 1600x900 with a 16.4" notebook?

On a 1600x900 screen, the HD content would be downscaled to 720p. The difference in quality is discernible..

first off, nothing is getting scaled to 720p in your situation. ^^^ false.

720p content would be getting upscaled to 900p, or 1080p content would be downscaled to 900p... but not both at once... and nothing is getting scaled to 720p, that just makes no sense.

how much you notice depends on how good the scaling algorithms are. "almost impossible to notice to all but the most discerning eyes" is achievable.

One more question. Would regular DVD look ugly at full screen 1920x1080? Regular DVD is only 480p so exploding it to 1080p would make it ugly, no?
