Other than Sony Optiarc and Panasonic/Matsh1ta, which other manufacturers make internal 12.7mm blu-ray drives for laptops?

Hi, I have looked around and it looks like that LG and Pioneer have them but they are all SATA. In fact, all new BD Drives are SATA. My notebook optical drive connector is ATAPI. Matsh1ta has UJ-110, UJ-210, UJ-220 but I don't trust them anymore. My UJ-220 is broken (see my other thread). Sony Optiarc has it (BC-5500A) but the speed of BD movie Read is only 2x and DVD+DL Write is only 4x. I am looking for a faster drive.

Unlikely you're going to find that since it's backwards technology. Blu-ray as it is is a slow moving technology (due to Sony's poor marketing) so it's doubtful any manufacturer would invest money to provide that much diversity. If I were you, I'd be looking for a portable external drive which I believe Pioneer makes. Either that or upgrade to a newer computer.

Wouldn't an external drive be even slower than ATAPI? The USB 2 port would be the bottle neck, isn't it?

Yes this. ^^ But I've read reviews with external drive that use USB with acceptable data transfer rates. In fact, as strange as it may sound, one unit I read a review on showed no significant improvement using esata over USB.

In any event, you really need to entertain the notion you may have to upgrade. Especially if you want to keep up with the fast pace of changing technology.

I snagged an LG BDrive off ebay for $69, maybe could put one of those in an external enclosure? Dunno. Was cheap and works great though internally.

Not enough choice with PATA drives. I want a faster drive (at least 8x DVD-R DL, 6x BD-ROM)
