does it exist? Now im not talking about the blu ray burner... just the reader
-
Yes, currently Sony offers Blu-ray burners on notebooks
-
no i know the burners exist when u buy one from sony or dell... but im saying is there an after market drive you can buy?
-
just a reader not a burner
-
the inspiron series have it. i know it was an option for my 1520, but it was REALLY expensive.
-
lol guys your missing the point here... here let me clear something up...
I just bought a inspiron 1520... and i have a cd/dvd drive... and i want to upgrade to a blu ray reader not burner..,.. yes i know dell has it but its 700 bux and its also a burner... is there a place like new egg that sells a laptop size blu ray reader for a laptop.... -
I haven't seen one, but that doesn't mean they aren't out there, yet at least.
Try Google. If it's not there it probably hasn't been created yet. -
I know what you meant.
The Dell site says the Blu-Ray drive on the Inspiron series is meant to burn AND play Blu-Ray discs. -
yes, there is, Panasonic. It's not laptop, but a BD drive for laptop. The price is USD999, although the price is discounted to about USD 800. Sorry, no link.
Also not sure if it's only for OEM sale or for retail as well -
Oh, here it is, just found it

Unless you got like a 1920x1200 screen, you won't be able to get the full HD out of it.

Are there any movies which actually use HDCP yet? -
I don't know any movies with HDCP, but my PS3 contains HDCP, which means I have to make connection via component to VGA, and the picture appeared green. Sod the HDCP. -

I have a feeling HDCP will make a lot of people angry. I was planing to get a PS3 and use component cable, but now I'm scared. I hope HDCP just dies

its true that you won't get the full hd picture without a 1920x1200 screen.
but even a 1280x800 screen is enough to display a 720p image, which most HD tv's have.
every step up: 1440x900 (displays 810p), 1680x1050 (displays 945p), will increase the image quality, up to 1920x1200 (displays 1080p). but any of those resolutions will look VERY slick and better than a standard DVD by far. you won't be thinking "darn, this would look SOO much better with a x% increase in vertical resolution! I need like 100 more P!"
they are all really high resolutions in reality, more than capable of displaying HD imagery to a very high degree of a quality.
im looking forward for some compressed HD content that fits on a standard DVD. MAYBE a DL DVD. -
Ok so im seeing regular computer Blu ray burning drives for a desktop priced at 400, still no laptop drive. I do not want a burning drive, just the reading drive.
-
Dont waste your time trying to find just a reader. Back in the day you could get 52x cd readers. Companies realized people dont want to just read, they wanna write. Therefore they are not going to manufacture a blu-ray drive that only reads. However, it would be cool if they did for a cheap price.
-
From what I understand after researching laptops that I want to buy, there is NO reader-only drive. While HD DVD has reader only, BD does not. Even sony VAIO does not have one.
-
yeah but for a difference in 400 dollars... i want to just read.
-
Question: are you going to install it in laptop or desktop, internally or externally? If it's laptop you want, then expect a high price.
In the UK, Desktop version ranged from GBP 300-600 (just times it by 2 for USD price). That is the price we must pay. -
internal laptop unless they have an external reader.
Yeah ive seen them for $440+ US
