Hello, I was looking at the specs of the msi gt729... and I see on xoticpc(on the 1260$ version) that it has a blue-ray readerbut with a res of 1680 X 1050... isn't it weird... I mean a blue-ray reader on a non-full HD computer... Does it makes sense to you?
-
Does it have external HDMI port?
-
yes... oh yeah didn't think of it... cause i don't see the point of viewing a blue-ray DVD on a 1680 X 1050 screen which isn't even HD(I think)
-
Hey, all you need is 1280x720 to display 720p content, and your system can do that easily.
-
Technically, I believe even the res of 1280x720 is HD.
edit: TehSuigi beat me to it *epic fail* -
thats true... so if i downgrade the res to 1280 X 720 it'll be HD but not if I stay at 1680 X 1050, i understood right?(I,ll answer tomorrow, I'm off right now)
Thank you -
You wont be able to view 1080p in its native form on a laptop obviously. But I think 1680 should still look good.
Mainly you should use it as an output to a larger LCD TV -
What your true question should be, is whats the aspect ratio.
While 1680 X 1050 is above 1280 X 720, the aspect ratio in 1680 X 1050 is not 16:9 (HD aspect ratio)
So to get the HD aspect ratio, you will have black bars on your screen, not allowing you to use your full screen (unless you want to stretch the image.)
Here a link to a wikipedia image to kinda explain more.

Bluray is not 16:9, its 16:10. A 50" HDTV will have black on the bottom/top. His ratio is right, and yes bluray will look MUCH better on that than a dvd would.

^ i didnt say 720p or 1080p. i said that blurays play wider...which is what you just essentially said. my dad has a 16:10 laptop and it has no black bars with blurays.
-
That's going the other way - if your dad's 16:10 display had no black bars, the video was taller instead of wider.
16:10 is taller than 16:9 (like 1280x800 vs. 1280x720). -
There are huge amounts of people watching Blu-Ray movies on 720p TVs. The vast majority (~75%) as far as I know, although now that full HD TVs are cheaper that might have changed.
Anyway, the point is that on a 1680x1050 LCD, you may not be getting exact 1:1 scaling, but you are still getting the majority of the resolution benefits, and more than all those people watching 720p TVs. The movie will be sharp with a lot of fine detail. So it is still better than nothing - and certainly miles better than watching a DVD on the same laptop. -
Wow thank you for explaining me, I thought that if the res was not 1080p or 720p it would not be HD, but as I understand now, it is but not in the standard... you don't get 100% of the benefits but it's still much more defined..
THANK YOU!

Indeed - remember, DVD is still only 720x480 and interlaced. ANY progressive resolution higher is going to be better-looking.
-
ok thank you
-
Blu-rays will look great on a 1680x1050 screen.
-
great, thank you for all your anwers, now it makes more sense to me
