I have an HP dv6-6100 laptop from around 2011. Its hard drive was dying, so I replaced it with a 512GB MX100 SSD which has worked perfectly fine since the end of October until today. Today, I left the laptop alone for half an hour or so, then came back and resumed working with Windows 7 Home x64. I have it set not to go to sleep or hibernate when plugged in (it just turns off its screen). It worked for a few seconds after turning the screen back on, then threw me out to a black screen with a Boot Device Not Found error.
Turning it off and on appears to have fixed it for now (I'm using it to type this post), but I'm worried -- that's not even a Windows BSOD, it's just a straight hardware or firmware fault. Is there some tool I can use to check whether the SSD is OK? Is it worth opening it to see whether a cable is loose or something? I'm on vacation so it's been sitting on my desk for quite a few days now and it's unlikely that anything physical has happened to it..

Sounds like it might have just hiccupped once. If it recurs repeatedly then that might be cause for concern and need further troubleshooting.
Of course you could check the cables if that is how it is designed to connect the drive.

I spent some more time Googling this and there is a 7 page thread on the Crucial forums with people who have variations of this issue (some people get a BSOD, some only see it at a cold boot, etc., but the device always disappears from the BIOS). Apparently it just happens sometimes. I'm fine with it if it's only once every 3 months, but if it becomes more frequent, that's obviously a problem. On the bright side, Crucial people are aware of the issue and there might be a firmware update eventually.
And yes, it's mostly backed up (barring a few saved games).RCB likes this.
