Hi I don't know if this is the right place to ask this so sorry if it isn't.
Some laptop manufacturers have an option for an i5-2430M processor instead of an i7. Now I know there's perks between the 2 as in the i5 will be cheaper and the i7 is more future proof and some games benefit from an i7. But my question is that if I choose the i5 and upgrade the GPU to a gtx 580m, will there be any bottle-necking by the processor?

Here is a youtube video that caught my attention: MSI GT685-818US Core i5 GTX 580M 15.6" Gaming Notebook Unboxing & First Look Linus Tech Tips - YouTube

    thanks for any input!

if you're planning on gaming then get the better gpu.

if you're going to use it for work that requires CPU (i.e. photoshop, rendering soft, etc.) then get the i7

if you plan on keeping the laptop for long time, get both upgrades and skip those that you can do later, such as RAM and HDD.

The simple answer: no, you won't be bottlenecking the GPU if you get the i5. The GPU will still be the bottleneck in games

no it won't struggle, but the newer games will like quad cores more and more.

Skyrim, with the latest patches, is multithreaded (it can use at least 3 cores: Havok, AI, game engine) so it will run better on a quad than on a dual core i5.

And, as we go further into the future, more and more games will start benefiting from quads.

HOWEVER, the i5 with a powerful GPU is still a good cost effective method
