Hey everyone. Here's the spec I purchased from pc specialist. I included just a single SSD, no disk drive and no OS as I figure I can upgrade myself and get them cheaper as required.
I wish to purchase an additional 1tb drive to install as soon as the laptop arrives. Can anyone recommend which to go for? I have experience building desktops but I'm new to laptops. What is the difference between a desktop or laptop drive? Will a desktop drive fit?
If you can recommend any options I'd appreciate it.
Also, do you know if I will be able to upgrade the laptop to include a Thunderbolt port in the future?

BiWin SSDs never heard of them before, anyways you said you would upgrade later if you aren't satisfied. Did PC Specialists offer you a 240W adapter? If so, I'd get them to be safe for later upgrades as you said. 1070 would've a TDP of 150W or less and with current AC adapter, you've only 30W headroom which would be needed for CPU,iGPU, Disks, Displays and of course, ports as well (Incl USB, TB3 etc..).
Thunderbolt port is present already just renamed into USB Type C which can connect as DP for monitor,eGPU enclosures as TB3 or for quick charging mobiles/Macbooks. How To Geeks explains what isUSB Type C and how to use it
You've a beast with you. -
Awesome! Thanks for the reply.
Funny, I asked a customer service advisor re thunderbolt and he said it didn't have it! I have a feeling he really didn't have a clue.
I'll ask them about the possibility of a 240W adapter. I'd have hoped the one that's supplied would have been sufficient however.
Can't wait to get my hands on it now! -
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005255PDK/?tag=pcpapi-20 1TB 7200rpm spin w/ 64mb cache, but keep in mind this fills up your other 2.5inch. Now if its the P650RS(clevo) then you should have two M.2 slots which i would use if you get any ssd. I ordered that clevo model with M.2 ssd, i have a 250gb 2.5inch which ill raid with another, you could do this same thing with two m.2's later or wait for nvme prices to drop.

I'm almost positive the p650 doesn't have a thunderbolt port. USB type C is just the connection type. It's the latest one and is completely reversible which is nice. It has no effect on speed. The ports on the laptop are USB 3.1 gen 2 which is 10gbps. Thunderbolt 3 is 40gbps. The old thunderbolt 1 was 10gbps so it's on par with that. Thunderbolt 3 uses the new type c port as well. For reference the normal rectangular USB port/plug is called type A. Type C is actually a replacement for those other ports and it does have better support for other features like higher transfer rates which is why thunderbolt 3 uses it, but the actual port on the laptop is only USB 3.1 gen 2 so it won't make a difference.
Edit:
The higher end clevos with desktop CPUs do have thunderbolt 3 ports though.Jtknights08 likes this. -
Don't think that is 2.5"...
-
It is but the price skyrocketed, just look up 2.5 inch hdd on pcpartpicker... -
I'd recommend the HGST Travelstar 7K1000 1TB 7200rpm 2.5" drive.. It's awesome and has quite performance for the price!Vasudev and tilleroftheearth like this.

Thanks for the reply! I ended up buying this one.
I'm wondering now though, do you know if I will be able to use it at the same time as my SSD? Someone mentioned something about slots - will this one be able to fit / work with both? -
Yes. The ssd will be in one of the m2 slots.

Thanks, got it installed now. Couple of screws and I was able to shove it under.alexhawker likes this.

Yeah Clevo laptops generally have really easy access to the HDDs...
-
msi too
unlike every other manufacturer out there -
Maybe most consumer oriented machines, but most (non thin/light) business notebooks make drive swaps very easy too.
I need to remove two screws and one panel to be able to access both 2.5" bays and the mSATA slot on my M4800.

Yeah till you have the warranty voided sticker.. At least Clevo doesn't do any such shenanigans...
-
the msi usa rep say that the sticker is just there to see if user have entered the machine and caused damage
though alcohol and heatgun/hairdryer will make a quick job of that adhesive
