    Hi all, stupid noob here,

I have a fairly new Asus G50VT-X5 (April purchased from Best Buy) with the Intel Duo Core P7450 2.13 Ghz processor.

I got drunk a few weeks ago and bought an Intel Duo Core T9600 2.8 GHz to "upgrade" it, I guess when I had a few drinks I wanted to turn my "bad mother f****r" into the Baddest Mofo In The Jungle.

Can anyone offer me any insight? The T9600 is compatible, right? Will I be good installing this? Is it a nice upgrade/significant upgrade/good/bad/ugly?

Any tips or feedback would be appreciated. Also, is there anything else I can upgrade on my G50VT-X5? Anything I definitely should do/probably should/could do if I wanted/might be a good idea/ definitely don't/ I'm an idiot for buying this/etc.

Thanks again for ya'lls help, much obliged and appreciated, Dan

Yes, the T9600 is compatible with your G50. It shouldn't be too hard to swap the CPU out. A jump from 2.13GHz to 2.8GHz is a healthy upgrade.

That is compatible and yes, it is a nice upgrade. you will feel the performance boost over P7450.

I am wondering how much you paid for it. I did a CPU upgrade to my F8Va-C1 recently with a T9900. (paid $425 on ebay)

First of all THANKS to both of you Soviet Sunrise and ramgen.

I was looking on Newegg a few months ago, I'm pretty sure a "P" 9xxxx something or other was $549 etc.

    I got a few weeks ago, a "T"9600 for $339 .... Isn't T much better than P? And at over $200 less! I did good right?

Again thank you again for helping a noob!

A healthy upgrade? That depends entirely on what you are referring to really.

You might notice an overall faster system but in terms of actual gaming performance increases, that is a totally different matter all together.

The T and P series perform comparably. The main difference is power draw; the P series draws 25W to the T series' 35W at peak.

Hi Dan - I was eying that processor myself, can you tell me what spec is SLG9F or SLB47 ? it is inprinted on the back of the processor. It would help me a lot in deciding to buy it or not.

    Thank you,
    Cosmin

It's been installed and its running like a champ. My mouse cursor moves at freaking warp speed now. Awesome. Currently idling at 33-34degrees C.

I have to leave work for a Dr. appt, will report back in a few hours.

I guess you ended up voiding your notebook's warranty (if it had any), to see the cursor move at warp speeds. Anyway, gratz on the upgrade. If you were looking for a general performance boost, a faster HDD/SSD is usually better.

Cosma12 ... it is a S-spec: SLB47 .... i have no idea what that means but maybe you'll enlighten me?

Again I am psyched. I am ripping a DVD currently. It is still taking 30-45 mins, like it used to, but it is using 2% instead of 100% of the CPU .... I am loving this.
THANKS TO ALL for the help... Maybe if I hang out around here long even I will not be a stupid noob ;0

Too late, he already upgraded. Not really a big issue. Worst comes the worst, just swap CPUs back and send it in for warranty.

Its an ASUS, and they have something up with the warranties being voided if you upgrade the CPU, GPU or w/e.

Hi SamsonAKAK - there are curently two revisions of these processor, SLB47 and SLG9F, and I was thinking that for my laptop the revision number would be important, however somebody from lenovo forums clarified that both would work...thanks for sharing this info with me and enjoy your new cpu!

as sgogeta4 said, if you need to use your laptop waranty in the future, you can always swap back the old processor before sending it in - so you may want to hold on to it and not sell it...

Just an update: Contrary to someone's previously posted sarcasm, I didn't install this upgrade for warp speed mouse cursors. I just wanted to max out my machine, and I was schooled that Asus gives you one of the best bangs for the buck, and this machine is pretty ninja, it was a Bad Mother "Trucker" to begin with, I just wanted to make it the "Baddest Mo Fo In The Jungle"..

...In all seriousness, I've been doing quite a bit of audio/video stuff with broadcasting movies online streams, ripping DVDs with DVD Decrypter, compiling them with Handbrake, etc. It is MUCH FASTER. I read that I could expect a 17%-20% performance increase.... While I don't know exact numbers, it is indeed MUCH FASTER in those aspects and overall.

I will admit that it is running much hotter. I had a video streaming on Justin.tv, a DVD ripping, and a separate video compiling, while browsing the web, and it was just kicking ... But it did push 80C and got quite hot. I ordered an Antec 200 cooler/chiller because I was told that it was the best, so hopefully that helps.

I'm curious, not that I'm *going* to, but is there anything else upgradable on this G50VT-X5? I was told that the RAM is definitely *not* upgradable, but is there anything else? Video card, etc.? Thanks for the input. -D

CPU, RAMs and Hard drive are the upgradeable parts in most laptops (including yours).

I have a G51vx, which is almost the same as the G50. The only upgrade I've successfully done so far is stick a second hard drive into it, for a combined space of about 600 GB.

I noticed some nicely priced X9100 Core 2 Extreme processors (OEM, not ES) on eBay. I don't know if they work in the G50 though.

I just ordered the Asus G50VT-X5. I got it for 750 bucks. It is basically a replacement system for my Old Dell XPS m170 system. I have been out of the Laptop Market loop for quite some time, but after reading through tons of reviews I think this laptop, on paper, was the best value on the market at this time. Either way, I am on a tight budget and the replacement was unexpected so I hope this laptop performs.

Anyway, please let me know how you like your system and the new processor upgrade.

I use my laptops primarily for Gamingn and some Adobe photoshop editing and site design (amateur hobby not professional). I only play Lineage 2 and some RTS's like Demigod. They played great on my old system so I would imagine the new Notebook should be adequate. Great forum here people. You guys provide alot of good knowledge, incite and sarcasm.

And to the OP. You asked what other upgrade you can do to speed up your system. Someone mentioned upgrading the Hard Drive with a Solid State Drive. They are expensive, but maybe by the time Christmas comes around Santa will have one for you at a good price. Goodluck.

I went from a T5800 to a P9600 and don't see any obvious differences for the moment ;-) But it's definately cooler and cpu usage is very low. Depends on what you do on your computer. No differences at all when gaming except in GTA IV maybe but hey who cares ;-)

Buying a SSD gives a better boost sensation. ( faster windows loading...it's more obvious i mean)

You can also flash the GPU for a better performance. :D
