I plan on upgrading the hard drive in my MacBook as soon as I get it. Do I really need to mess around with buying an enclosure and cloning the factory HD to the new HD? Since the notebook is brand new there will be no "joshuaLX" specific files on the factory hard drive that I would be worried about losing. Can I just swap in the new hard drive and and install OSX from the restore disk? If this is possible how would I go about formatting the new hard drive?

You do know that they're pretty hard to replace (basically disassemble all the way), plus if they see you opened it they'll void your warranty?
You can install OS X on the new disk, there is a partition tool in one of the menus when you boot the cd. -

Yes, you have the procedure right. Assuming there is no data whatsoever that you need to preserve on the original drive.
1. remove original drive.
2. insert new drive.
3. install OSX from the included discs.
That's it, piece of cake. The drive partitioning and formatting will occur as part of the OSX installation. -
