SOOOO.. while waiting for the wii I saw a guy with a broad band card playing WoW despite the lack of a local hotspot... and the way he described it is you can use the internet pretty much any time anywhere..
I then saw an add for it on tv a few minutes ago claiming to give one away free for blah blah blah reasons.. and it reminded me about it.
Now.. the question I have is do you have to pay by the month for the service? or just pay for the card and bam your online thats it? I wouldn't mind paying a good bit for the card itself.. but, I'm not about to pay for internet by the month..

The Cards you are talking about are Wireless Network Cards that use 3G Technology. There are a number of Mobile companies that offer this service. Vodafone, Orange, 3, and I think Verison as well as many other companies offer this service. The card itself costs something around $150 think. The fee depends on the provider, but there is probably a monthly fee.
Apparently on some 3G networks, you have to pay a lot of download
of files using the network. 3G is apparently quite slow as well.
But you'll have check out the websites of Orange or Verison or 3 for more info on the 3G service. -
EVDO is definitely the best in the US right now. Verizon and Sprint have the biggest EVDO networks. Avoid Cingular's EDGE as it's a lot slower. Unlimited EVDO access from Verizon is an additional $60/mo, does not use airtime. Sprint may be cheaper but I'm not sure. I've downloaded at just under 100KB/s with Verizon EVDO through my Motorola E815 phone using a USB data cable.

I must agree. I have a Verizon card, and in general I get good download rates. I thought that the $60/month is if you have a cellular contract with them, $80 if not. NTW, unlimited is really in the 3-10 Gb/month, AFAIR as i reacll from a HoFo thread.

I got kicked off Verizon.
Unlimited means you can do something low impact like check your e-mail unlimited. It does not mean unlimited use like, you can use it unlimited.
I think the advertising is a little shady.
I did not really read the fine print, but i did ask the fresh faced just out of college sale tech hottie if I could use it in an unlimited fashion and she blinked her eyes at me and said "oh yes." :shifty -
I had a sprint PPC6700 w/EVDO. I hit over 120k/s down. The problem with EVDO is the upload is horrible. Playing WOW is fine, but if you wanted to say play Counterstrike, your ping would be horrible.

I get faster than that simply by tethering with my 3g phone using cingulars umts/hsdpa network and these are just the 1st gen of 3g phones...the next gen phones will be 3.6 phones. They have pc cards pushing 4m already. I believe the network has the capacity to go to upwards of 14m. Here is a quick speed test while I was in a 3g area...I average 1.5 when in a 3g+ area.
Test Result Details
Your connection is: 1006 Kbps or 1 Mbps
You downloaded at: 123 kB/s
You are running: 18 times faster than 56K and can download 1 megabyte in 8.33 second(s) -
My father is a truck driver, and we all have Verizon phones. I was previously told at the verizon store that i could not 'use the phone as a modem' (i dont know if thats the proper terminology or not.)
We all have motorolla v325 phones and if there is some way we could add unlimited internet, and get him a new phone that would allow him to plug it into his computer to get him internet access that would be really awesome. Previously i was told that i would have to buy a dedicated card+line to get him internet on his laptop. It would be the perfect gift if i could get him set up with internet out there (even when hes not in a major urban area he should be able to get gprs). If any of you know of any websites that have information about doing this on a verizon network i would greatly appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. -
Conversely, we asked another router manufacturer about plans for PX-500 compatibility, and they did a firmware update available a week ago to their MB6000 router, and it is now compatible with the PX-500.
Even though the MB6000 looks funny, our tech support guys love this router because they hardly have any issues with it.
You can buy the MB6000 from us here, and trust that you'll get excellent customer support from the EVDO EXPERTS at EVDO INFO.
