I have been sorting out to buy an external HD. Popular choices include SeaGate, Samsung, and WD. After reading all these brands' reviews - PROS and CONS - I have decided to try a new one which is uncommonly known brand in the portable external HD market: Buffalo.

I recently bought a crystal black piano finish Buffalo HD-PEU2 250GB external hard drive and it was really worth the try, time, and money. Aside from the affordable price, sleek and robust design, light weight, and lucrative variety of colours (i.e. Crystal Black, Ruby Red and Pearl White), the package came with interesting features whose some competitive advantages you may not find in WD or in SEAGATE. Such rare and unique features include:

    >Memeo™ AutoSync Software which automatically syncs your MiniStation with either Microsoft Windows, MAC, or even Linux! (tried it also in Ubuntu 9.04 and worked fast!)
    >Memeo™ auto-back system (can be personalised)
    >Secure Lock Mobile™ which lets you encrypt your important personal data, preventing unauthorised access (customisable)
    >TurboUSB which increases USB file transfer speed at an amazing rate up to 20%!!! (VERY TRUE which I myself experienced when I was transferring large video files and games like DOTA, NBA, RED ALERT 3 and HITMAN)
    >EconoManager which allows you to save time and energy consumption which you can personalise at your own discretion
    >portable and lightweight
    >Easy Set-up Guide and Reference
    >USB-powered which means that there are no power supply needed
    >Compatible in Windows, MAC, and any Linux distro (i.e. Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.)
    >3-Year warranty!

Is this the Buffalo model that has a USB cord which wraps around the HD? I've been considering that one as well since it's shockproof and rugged. The provided encryption feature looks interesting. Have you run any benchmarks on the device to see how fast the speed is?

-I think you should really give it a shot. After I bought my Buffalo mini-station HD-PEU2 250GB, I was really more than satisfied with the results (^^,). That is why, after my satisfaction with Buffalo, I bought their gaming router which really worked great too! I got the WBMR-HP-GN : AirStation™ HighPower ADSL+ Modem Router which has the SOSS (One-Touch Secure System) feature which is good for online and network gaming :)

-You can check this link for their routers too.

-Uhm, no my HD-PEU2 mini-station lite's usb doesn't have a wrap around feat. I think the other models have. You can check the link in my original post :)

-As for the benchmarks, I have tried to benchmark it with WD and Samsung just at home. Buffalo's TurboUSB really made a difference. I will try to post some screen captures of the transfer rate. (^_^)

Buffalo makes some of the best stuff you can get.

I have gone through like 6 routers till I got a cheap buffalo one and it both out performed and outlasted all the rest. Its still working.

Shame there products became scarce and prices whent up due to a big lawsuit against them.

Good to see they have new products on the market again.

They are just as reputable as the other big names you know, they just are not as well known and had that setback that put them company in a bad financial situation.
