did you have a Western Digital elements? i had one of those in 500Gb and it failed also, that bufallo thing sounds like a gimmick, you need e-sata!

try and get one with an eSATA connection if your laptop supports it. or firewire, again, if supported. both will be quicker than normal usb.
i dont know anything about this buffalo thing, but a few people have posted comments similar to my thoughts: on the fly compressing, upgraded reader components not usually used in external devices etc.

I am not sure if it actually works better.
I would say that most external harddrives can transfer at about 27mb/sec, so a 60% improvement would be ~43mb/sec.
It sounds possible to me, I know that a few VIA USB hubs can push the full 60mb/sec, so maybe Buffalo and them teamed up to make a SATA to ub adaptor with one of their hubs.
I would look around for some reviews, it would be interesting if it actually was as fast as they say. It would practically be as fast as esata

I think Buffalo uses Samsung drives. But every model differs, so you dont really know what drive it is going to be,

    EDIT:
Wow, I just saw the date of that article,
    here is a review by NBR's rambo29:

I would say that its probably better to just go esata for now. Turbo USB doenst seem to do anything:

    I quote from his review:
    "Turbo USB

As per Buffalo this technology will speed up the data transfer as it has some kind of controller inside the drive. But this need the software to be used and activated.I took HD Tach and HD Tune reults before and after for comparison.

Before the TURBO USB was enabled it can be seen that the average transfer rate is 14.8MB/s.

After enabling it via the software the speed increased to an average of 16.2MB/s!!!"

    Hi.

Thanks for the Reply`s guy`s , I dont have esata on my notebook, and the extra cost is not justifiable to me at the moment.

Yes i had a WD Elements , the PSU light would go out when connected to the drive, or as soon as i plugged the PSU in, it was hit and miss for a week until it died.

I would like a WD 1TB External HDD as they are reliable, but they probably use the same PSU and that put`s me off.

    Thanks

    John.

    Hi.

I decided to get the 1tb Buffalo Turbo USB for £74.99 delivered , it gets good reviews and is supposed to be quiet.

    Thanks.
