Planning on buying a new desktop soon and I will be adding an SSD in there. Was planning on getting the Intel 510 but heard the Intel 520 is out soon. Worth waiting for or just get the Intel 510?

By the way, how is the Crucial m4 and how does it compare to the Intel 510 and any guesses on how it would compare to the Intel 520?

    Samsung 830 128GB > Crucial M4 128GB > Intel 510 120GB.

Worth waiting for the next best thing? In my opinion no, if you want an SSD you may as well get it now. The new Intel 520 will not be noticeably faster than Samsung 830.

In general, if you wait for the upcoming model you will have to wait forever.

Whenever intel starts selling the 520 they will probably announce the 530. What will you do then?

Or any modern SSD, really. We'd need 1 or 2 orders of magnitude in SSD latency improvements for one drive to truly feel more responsive than another in a typical desktop environment.

Actually, after studying several real world results I'm not too sure of what I said.

Samsung 830 Series 512GB SSD Review > Benchmarks: Real-World Applications - TechSpot Reviews
    Samsung SSD 830 Review (256GB) | StorageReview.com
Samsung 830 Series 256GB SSD Launch Review - Load Times
OCZ Octane 512GB SATA III SSD Review - Office / Game Maintenance

It seems like nearly every site and benchmark comes to different winners.

    During normal usage? yes.

During heavy multi tasking and file copies one would be able to notice a difference between a SATA II drive like Intel 320 and a SATA III drive like Crucial M4.

Phil, yeah - the real world usage of the Intel 510 (in my usage) is above the M4 (both the 250/256GB models).

And again, I agree with the SATA2 vs. SATA3 comparison - night and day different to me - on a platform that can utilize it.

Depends if you can justify the cost of the Intel drive but you do get best in the industry reliability backed by 5 year warranty.

Intel is not aggressive on the SSD market compare to the rest of the players so don't hold your breath for any new SSD drives from them.

Intel's 520 and Hawley Creek have been pushed back to Q1 2012.

I was waiting on Hawley Creek myself but looks like I'm going for the 310 mSATA the year cause I'm done with waiting.

The news for the delay of the SSD's is still new, at least now I know I'm not waiting anymore.

If you can wait till February - March 2012 for the 520 then by all means wait if no then just go ahead and get a 510.

Yeah saw that. Sucks. Probably Intel who is wrestling with the Sandforce controller :p
