My Inspiron laptop E1705 doesn't seem to be able to burn/copy a DVD-R of my mom's memorial (it is pictures and music..like a slideshow)
I have tried and tried to copy it so I can save it, but someone said this Dell doesn't have the right "stuff"...
So I am looking for a DVD burner, external, that I can use with my USB port. Has anyone had good results with one....what is the one you would recommend to use with this Dell?
It would be nice to have it semi-portable so I can take it from one house to another.
Thank you....Linda

I bought this one:

It just came today so I don't have much experience with it, however I bought it for the USB power and the streamlined size (and the lightscribe where you can have it etch graphics/titles into your DVD (have to have the right type media). Ordered last Friday, received yesterday. -
Thanks for your input. Let me know how it works. My laptop is several + yrs. old I think. I inherited from my mom.
Any Inspiron E1705 user's inputs?? -

What optical drive does your laptop have?
You can run Nero Infotools on your drive, and you will be able to see what types of discs your drive can burn.
Usually when you want to copy something on a laptop, you will want to insert the dvd, and than open Nero. You can burn an image of the disc to your computer.
Than after the image is created, you can burn the image to another disc.
That is the way you can copy things on a laptop.
If your drive cannot burn DVD's than that would be the limitation. It has nothing to do with your laptop not being able to do it. Its just the abilities of your current optical drive.

If you just want to move from house to house. There are other options than the slim LG burner. The ones with power supplies are heavier, but burn at higher speed and most importanly cheaper.
The one i have is this one. $49.99+ $8.62 3-5 day shipping.

K-Tron...sorry to be late answering, but we had to take my dad to the hospital, so I have been there.
My drive says: HL-DT-ST-CDRW/DVD GCC 4244 (HL-DT-ST-CD-R/W//D)
I like the one that Serenity mentioned above--I hope it works with my INspiron E1705...using Windows XP)?

External optical drives will work with vista/xp without any problem.
If you want to get a dvd burner which will fit inside your laptop you should look into any of these:

I would personally go with the Lite-On or the Pioneer.
I hope your dad is okay
Best wishes,
