I think I am going to buy the Hpdv5000z and I was wanting 1 GB of ram but was going to get 512 MB ram (2x256). Would it be cheaper and better to buy 1GB single stick online and take out one 256 stick to have 1x256 and 1 GB stick? That would mean I have to find one for under 75 for it to be cheaper since (2x512) option is +75
Sorry for the riddle, simplified I just need 1 GB stick for under $75 if at all possible to save me some $

I would remove both 256 sticks and put in two 1GB sticks. Expensive at first but it's where you'll want to end up in the end. That way you also have dual channel running.

Yeah, you will want to match the ram for dual channel. If cost is a factor, you could do two 512mb. Most people are probably fine with 1GB total but as Aryding mentioned, you will probably want 2GB in the future so your current RAM would be wasted. I have a 1gb system and often run Outlook, Firefox, Word and Photoshop and things run pretty well. Of course things run much better with Photoshop closed.

I have to agree here. Whereas 1 GB is fine for most users, I would prefer 2 GB of RAM. Try to configure your system to where you will not have to throw away as many sticks and therefore money.
I don't think HP offers it, but buying 1x1 GB RAM in the original configuration would be ideal. -
I'm going to go w/the 512 mb ram for my custom laptop but I want to order 2x 1 gig off of newegg, how do I know which ram is right for me? The laptop i'm getting is an hp pavillion dv6000t. Will this ram work: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227099
Seems kind of expensive at $100 a stick, I thought I saw one similar to this for around $75.... -
The Intel I915 chipset and anything newer allows dual channel to run even on mismatched pairs of RAM.
Buying Extra Ram to install after CPU purchase? Cheaper?
