I have an Asus G71G-A2, what a piece of crap by the way. Never Asus, Never again.

The screen needs replacing. Asus Denied the warranty that clearly shows on my invoice. Apparently only one company sells the B170UW02 V.0 in the US and thats laptopscreen.com They ran out of stock and wont have them in for 2 months. Alot of other companies say they sell this screen but it's really a "compatible" model/brand. This means either a knockoff brand or the sister screen for desktop monitors.

Does anyone have experience with these screens? How about the asian companies that actually sell the AUO B170UW02 V.0 screen? I dont want to get ripped off, but i need the thing for school. Taking it apart is fine, knowing whether the desktop version works in it etc is another.

I've been searching for days, but if you know of another well rated US distributor, well. I'd be super happy.

AUO had pretty bad reviews as far as I remember. Get an equivalent CMO screen.

Yeah i am actually not impressed. Especially after all this research and reading all these peoples comments on them. This would likely require a new/different cable fromt he motherboard to the screen right? Any idea if the ports on the motherboards are standardized or would I need to construct something. Would the inverter work with it?

Sorry, a lot of questions I know.

Screens all come from the same factories in China. True AUO is typically known for dim and grainy screens. Honestly as long as it works and doesn't cost an arm and leg, just go for another screen.

Thats the thing, how do I know if a ascreen is compatible... oh your saying just go with the one they sell whoever it is cause it doesnt matter really...

I would have thought they had a range of components that go in those screens that vary in price and quality so...

There's a variation in quality and types (CCFL or LED backlit), but the connectors are pretty standard for the same type of screen and the same resolutions. There are always a few exceptions so you could maybe open it up and check the connectors.

I've got it open and the old one out. Thats not an issue. Thing is, I'm used to desktops. I've been building them for ages, laptops seem to me to be more like the big box desktops. lots of proprietary connectors, harnesses and etc. Its hard to tell from some of these tiny pictures whether something shares a similar shape connector or the same connector.

Alot of time people will list the item as the B170UW02 V.0 but they send a compatible screen. In one instance the guys title reads, (not a laptop). What the ehck does that mean? Is it literal or does it mean it wont work in a laptop. I always ask but alot of these guys dont respond, or dont understand. Alot of them do not speak great english either.

What you need to do is look at the PDF spec sheet for your panel. I found one here: http://www.yslcd.com.tw/docs/product/B170UW02%20V.0.pdf

Page 11 has the connector type. The LVDS pinout is on page 19. Besides the connector type and the pinout, you need to take into account the position of the connector on the LCD so that you can figure out if your display cable will reach.

It's not easy looking for replacement screens. Start with your type (same resolution, same backlight type) and then look for their spec PDFs. Then look for pics.

    Good luck!

looks like i might have to stick with those compatibles and hope they work... they wont give me sheets or exact maker/model. and everywhere I can even find that sells screens i can look the specs up on, only sells them from china. I've had to replace a credit card buying stuff from China before so..

There seem to be more than a few on ebay. Again some are 'compatible' but I'm sure that at least a few are exact models.

Yeah thats what i'm going to go for. The more I have looked, I have found AUO is ont he few people who make a 17" WXUGA with two CCFL bulbs anyway... Otherwise i would have to step down to WXGA at least so far and thats looking at Chi Mei, Samsung, other AUO screens... in fact a quick search at screenaid shows me they dont have one single 17" wxuga 2-bulb CCFL screen

It turns out that the replacements most people sell, A sharp screen wont fire up due to firmware. I searched the sales forums here for b170uw02 but got nothing. Does anyone have any other suggestions, cant afford a whole new laptop right now... Asus is evil...
