I've purchased replacement power supplies from ebay that worked just fine. With ebay there's always the small chance of illegitimate parts. it's a risk/reward thing.
-
I'm afraid the chance is a bit greater than small. You see, batteries are among the most non-standardized (shapes/configuration) of all computer parts. Even worse, few manufacturers post enough useful information for you to judge their quality. That alone should make you suspicious of their origins. (most cheap batteries use inferior materials in their manufacture.)
Therefore, even though most manufacturers grossly overprice their batteries, it's still a better buy since that's the only way your machine will be covered under warranty should anything go wrong since using third party batteries will void your warranty.
In addition, not only could you not get a quality battery that doesn't hold it's change, it could also malfunction (even explode) and damage your computer making you solely liable for the repairs. That's provided there's anything left to fix.
If you do decide to buy a third party battery, at least get on that's manufactured by a reputable manufacturer like Panasonic. And you should also look for a long warranty. Ninety days being the standard, although one year is best. -
I bought a 9 cell battery for my HP 2510p off ebay. Now is not a 3rd party battery, its a HP built battery, but the battery runs just fine. If you can look for HP built battery that come from China or something. They are always cheaper.

thanks guys, i bought a genuine 8 cell for only $26 off ebay
-

if his computer still powers on with that, then maybe he will.

I've had a good experience with a very cheap battery of Ebay.
I would certainly do it again, the price difference is rewarding. -
Well its a powerseller from the us, and the feedback is all good so i have high hopes.
And i will let you guys know. -
I bought Dell Battery off EBay that outlasted my original Dell 1705 battery. But shop with care.
We know that Dell or Sony original batteries would never burn up.. right -
my battery was a 9 cell also a genuine HP battery for $51 including shipping. 6 months later i still have it and performing great. still holds a 8 hour charge on my small laptop. i use it everyday, sometimes i charge it twice in one day.

I prefer to get my batteries direct from the computer manufacturer. Yes, you pay a bit more, but. No fuss. No worry.
-
At up to 75% off genuine, I have always bought laptop batteries from eBay. I have had no problems.

Sure, if you want to risk it then go ahead. Just remember those eBay batteries might not be the same quality as original which may impair both performance and safety.
I don't want a hand grenade attached to my laptops bottom side. -
I've had my Dell Inspiron 6400 for 4 years now and those POS Dell 9 cell batteries always die after 12 months so I'm up to my 4th battery so far. First 2 were genuine Dell parts which I paid 130$ and the last 2 were Ebay batteries that cost 65$. All of them have worked fine and gave me about the same time when running on battery power. You have to be careful when you're shopping not to buy something that is obviously cheap but the last one was an generic nameless brand and after almost one years it still works fine.
That reminds me I'll probably have to shop for a new one next month since the 12 months is coming up. I swear its like there is a hidden timer in those batteries to destroy it after 12 months. One day you still have 80% charge left and the next day.. poof! the laptop won't boot and will flash the battery error code. -
The good thing though is that the manufacturer might call them back. But then you need to be looking at the website. -
Doesn't HP have a battery recall going on?
