On my laptop the HDD and Optical drive are right next to each other. Right now, I'm upgrading to Windows Vista and the CD in the drive is making the chassis vibrate. Feeling the part of the chassis where the HDD is there is a lot of vibrations...

Surely this cant be good for the HDD? How much can these HDD's take? I was under the impression they were quite sensitive :S

Don't worry about it. Hard disk tolerances are quite high, and for most around 300 G's for when in operation. Everything in the hard disk is very precisely built, and things don't move around at all. Thats why it can withstand such forces.

No need to worry Dean s notebook and desktop HDD can take a lot of abuse. They need to have a certain rating to absorb a certain amount of shock. I had this problem on my Dell CD/RW and that's usually where the problem lies.

You could try cleaning the disc before putting it into the drive. I used alcohol on a soft cloth and carefully cleaned the disc. You might want to try a good lens cleaner or try and find 99% pure alcohol and lightly clean the lens.

I did this and my problems went away.

    Ah, I see! That's OK then :)

    Thanks for clearing that up.

All I gotta worry about now is if this Vista upgrade is going to be successful!
