Can it boot a LIVEOS cd?
-
im not sure, how do i do that. I changed the CD drive so this cd drive can't be the problem there has to be a software problem or something i can fix by messing with the connector.
-
What's the OS? more specification might help. I recall there are two possibilities. One is if you uninstall Roxio product. The other one is something about registry fix. Try google cd drive not detected roxio with the first one. The second one I don't remember, try cd drive not detected windows xp registry. Hope that helps somewhat.

Remove the optical drive from your laptop. Start your laptop, and boot into windows. Switch your laptop off using Start -> Turn Off Computer.
Put the optical drive back into your laptop and see if windows is detecting it know. -
kk will try all of that as soon as i get back from school. Thought i am sure i have tried the removing it thing. And no i do not have ROXIO. Or maybe someone did install it. THanks guys will check when i get back from work and school.

H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Start the Run Command Prompt (windows key+r)
Type in "regedit" without the parrenthesis then click ok
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Then SYSTEM
Then CURRENT CONTROL SET
Then CONTROL
Then CLASS
Then find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
The whole thing looks like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Then delete the upper and lower filters.... -
I said i tried the filters thing already, there are no filters there.

Have tried removing the optical drive then puting it back in?
Forget to add, when you remove your optical drive clean the connectors by blowing some air on them.
A friend of mine had a similar problem to yours. removing the optical drive, blowing some air on the connectors fixed his problem.
-
Hmm gonna try blowing some air and see what happens. GOD I HATE THIS THING!!!!

Does the cd-rom show up in device manager? If so try deleting it and let windows re-install it. You may have already tried this, but it isn't in any of the posts.
-
Yes but now it does not show up there at all but it does show up in the bios so it has to be somthing with windows, ima reinstall w7 with a external CD druve, and then try from there.

yea guys i don't work today so once i go home i will reinstall windows and get back to you guys on my progress.

still not detected. Tried almost everything. I am now desperate for a solution. Even reformatted the computer and still nothing. BUt it shows up on bios. And shows up on my computer every once in a while.
SOM1 please help -
do you have access to another laptop? if you do you can swap the optical drives around and check the the one in you asus is not damaged.
Also try to see if you can boot with a Linux live CD. You don't have to intall it as you can run Linux directly from the CD. Try Ubuntu since it is very easy to use. With it you have to options; you can download an iso file and burn it, or if you don't have access to another computer you can order a live CD. The live CD is free and will be sent to you for free.
The link is here for the ISO, and here to order a CD. You have to create an account to order the free CD.
I'm asking you to test with Linux because if it works we will know that your optical drive is not at fault.
