The Asus F3Ja I am looking at has a slight downside, the CPU. But maybe the CD T2300E isn't such a bad performer as I think?
It bugs me that this laptop is equipped with it, since almost all new (well this is a new model, isn't it?) laptops come with the Core 2 Duo processor @ different speeds.
Anyone with experience with this CPU? I can see a number of areas where this processor is lacking:
1. The "E" means it does not support some Virtual Extensions or something, not too important for me
2. The speed is obviously lower than T2400, T2500, but compared with the lowest Core 2 Duos?
3. Is there IA64 support in these Core Duos?
4. 4MB of cache is certainly nice, but necessary?
I am asking this from a gaming point of view, but general as well. The bottomline is, do I need a faster processor apart from the obvious reason (faster is better), but in relation with the GPU in this machine? (X1600 256MB dedicated, 512MB total).
Thanks //Patrik

Typically, Intel processors perform better with more cache (more so than their AMD counterparts). 4MB of cache is good...go with it. How much performance you need depends on what you do with your notebook.
Edit - there is no IA64 support on ANY Core Duo processors, but rather the Core 2 Duo processors introduce this. -
The 4Mb of cache isn't on the T2300E, ajfink.
You are pretty much correct in your analysis, epatnor. The T2300E is faster than most people or games need it to be, so I wouldn't worry about it at all if the notebook has everything else that you want. And not all laptops come with Core 2 Duo. Most still ship with Core Duo's, it's just that Core 2 Duo is new and shiny and everyone on the forums wants oneBut that's not to say that the Core Duo is a bad processor by any stretch.

But alas! The F3Ja with Merom is over my budget I'm afraid. So that's why I wanted to know, that I would'nt screw my life up with a CD T2300E. -
Besides, I think that adding an extra GB of RAM would do more for the overall performance than even the fastest Merom!
Actually, I'm more concerned with the lack of 64-bit computing... I like my desktop AMD 64 and the different OS:s I have run on it, and am looking forward to the 64-bit Vista RC2. -
How are you guys thinking when it comes to 64-bit computing? Do you consider it to be an import feature for the future?

CD T2300E adequate performance?
