My cd drive started misbehaving weirdly yesterday, where any CD/DVD would make strange buzzing/scraping sounds when it is spinning. When I move the laptop, the noise changes a little, but it is still present.

The CDs are read/burned perfectly, so I know the reader is fine. Although it was unable to copy files to one HP DVD using the Live File System, where the DVD came out with this big white scratch on it. I believe that DVD was defective, because all the other HP DVDs that came with it were not good either.

Before and my affairs with the needle, which is still inside, the CD drive worked perfectly.

I have the following suspicions about this:
    1. The needle has moved close enough to the cd drive to intercept the DVD/CD.
    2. I may have not tightened the cd drive enough when I opened my laptop to find the needle.
    3. Possibly, the drive has somehow gotten loose as I have difficulty closing fully at occasional moments.

Although I will open the laptop again, I don't feel confident that anyhting I do myself will fix the problem, so I do need advice regarding what else could cause this.

As an immediate update, there are scratches on top of one DVD, as if it is scraping against something, most likely the needle. I guess I know where it is now and I am getting it out if I have to tear off every wire on the mobo...

No needle, the cd drive was covered with a lid that couldn't possibly let even a dust particle in. So what I did was assumed that the shape of the lid had changed in such a way that it made contact with the cds...so I removed it and let the cd drive in the lappy without a lid.

This resulted in the disappearance of the noise and I intend on leaving the drive without a lid :)
