Hi - -I upgraded my Tecra with a new DVD burner and got the "CD-om 'Error" message from BIOS. Does anyone know what caused this?
I had assumed it was an IDE mismatch (master /slave /cable). Now I'm not so sure. Is it a bad drive? Is it IDE? Something else?
-
Either you plugged it in the wrong way or you forgot the drivers, which is strange because that kind of thing has firmware and therefore shoudl automatically install istelf
It could be a bad drive
Or your computer might not support that particular kind of drive
id need a model number to klnow about that, because "tecra" doesnt help me that much
as far as i can see i dont think they support DVD burners...which tecra?
DVD SuperMulti (+/-R double layer) drive* supporting 11 formats
that isnt the most descriptive thing ever i could be wrong
good luck -
The machine is a Tecra M7 S7331 (Tablet), the drive is a Panasonic UJ-85J slim multi dual burner. Is this a match?
I inserted the drive firmly twice and it seemed to seat nicely.
No drivers carne with it. This is at the Bios, not windows, level. The firmware inside the drive should do the job. like you said.
What's to support , reader versus burner wise? I'm not sure the computer needs to do much other than communicate between Windows and the drive over a standard interface (which of course has to have matching hardware and be set to the correct master, slave etc.)?
-and thanks!

Your problem is caused by the DVD drive being set to Master Jumper settings by default.Toshiba Laptops require the drive be set to slave.I recently had the same issue with my Toshiba Qosmio and a new NEC DVD drive. You will have to have a way of changing the drive to slave to fix the problem.First contact panasonic to see it they provide software tools as this is the only way to change to slave jumper settings.next you will need a "slimline to 40pin IDE converter" that will allow you to connect you laptop DVD drive to a desktop PC via normal IDE interface and run the tool program provided by Panasonic.Once done simply reinsert the drive into your laptop and it should be fine.

Reaching Panasonic is no easy matter. I've called and emailed them. No reply to the email (5 days) and the rep promised to call back with firmware flash information about 3 days ago.
How did you get to them?
The reason I wasn't sure whether this was a master/slave issue, a bad optical drive or something else was that I had thought that master/slave/cable-select errors caused bios to say something like "IDE #1 error", not "CD-ROM Error"? You got a "CD-ROM Error" message with an IDE mismatch?
... and thanks for the reply ... -
I personally didnt have to contact panasonic as my issue was with a Sony NEC drive but i had the same exact problem. On boot i got to just before windows loading screen usually begins and recieved "CD-ROM Error" on screen.Once i changed the drive over to Slave all worked perfect and no more error. After researching a bit i found that most Toshiba and IBM Laptops are plagued with this issue and most Optical drives are set to master by default from the manufacturer so changing Jumper settings is really your only option.
The main problem with this is to change a Slimline drive to slave since your Laptop wont reconize it at all will require you to use a Slimline to 40Pin IDE Converter and connect the drive to a desktop PC in order to flash it's firmware. -
Knowing that you got the same error message and that you could cure it with firmware that set the drive to master makes me a believer.
If I can't get the firmware out of Panasonic I'll return it for another burner.
Are you happy with your NEC? Can you let me know the model and how you got the firmware?
Or recommendations for another drive that either has the firmware available with reasonable effort or that comes set to master? If anyone found a preset drive it would be nice to know where you found it. -
Hey again,
I would recommend the NEC drives i've been using them a while and find them to perform very well for me.The model i got was the Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7590A which cqan be found here http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16827118006
I got the updated firmware directly from NEC by going to there site http://www.sonynec-optiarc.eu/en/support-service/downloads/master-slave-changing.html and giving a description of my problem, they then contacted me by e-mail within 3 days and sent me the tools needed to update the drive.
I havent used any other brands of Slimline drives other then the Mat****a that came with my laptop but when looking over specs i found the NEC's to have the best burning speeds which aided in my choice.
And you made a small mistake you arent looking for a drive set to "Master" you need one set to "Slave" but i think it's unlikely you will find one.I spoke with several people when i first had the issue and seems just about every drive comes from the manufacturer with Master default settings. But i hope the info helps you and wish you good luck with Panasonic. -
Well I kind of have the same problem.i have qosmio f25(toshiba),and about 3 weaks ago I changed the dvd burner to HL-DT…,it was working perfectly.system recognized it and ….after couple of days,the”cd-rom-error”massage appeared at windows start up but I just reset the system and then it was ok.3 days ago the same massage appeared again, and ive done everything, but still that ****ing “cd-rom error”massage appears`at startup.i even plugged in the old M A T S H I T A dvd burner, and the system finds it.but after plugging in the new on,the system doesn’t recognize it.i don’t think its about the firmware .what should I do??
-
bhxtyrant did you have the problem rightaway??i mean that error massage apeared right after you plugged the new burner in,or ...?cause i just returned the hl-dt..burner, and got optiarc DVD RW AD-7590A .they said this one suit qosmio f25,and it seem to be working perfect right now,but im kind of worried that the system is gonna give me some eror massage in the next few days.so i would be thankful if you tell me .

Hey man, sorry for the late reply,I didnt notice this thread got bumped up.But yes i noticed it right away.I took the original burner out and put in the new Optiarc and on boot immediatly got the CD-ROM Error. If yours is working fine already you shouldnt have anything to worry about. My guess would be either your Optiarc may have been set slave by default already or perhaps you got a later model F25 where they corrected this issue.
"CD-ROM Error" message from BIOS at startup-what does it mean?
