CLEVO X8100/SAGER NP8120 GTX-680M Graphics card upgrade.

Hi,

So after buying a couple of graphics cards and wasting some money on a failed upgrade. I found a deal on the dual heatsink used for the GTX-680M upgrade on the X8100. I purchased the heatsink and then picked up a CLEVO GTX-680M on ebay supposedly pulled from a working system. I installed the card and booted into the BIOS where I discovered the graphics card showed up as UNKNOWN in the BIOS. I then rebooted to see if i could get into Windows which it did. I tried installing drivers but it would fail with UNRECOGNIZED HARDWARE error. I used NVFLASH to update the VBIOS to a CLEVO BIOS I found on TECHPOWERUP hoping that would work. It still showed up as UNKNOWN in BIOS. I searched Google for a couple days but found nothing other than BIOS updates. So I updated my BIOS to the latest version I could find and it still shows as UNKNOWN. I'm not sure what is happening. This card should be compatible with this laptop. I've done everything I can think of. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

"Unknown" in BIOS is normal. Have you modified .inf file in drivers? It is necessary for Nvidia drivers to reckognize new hardware configuration. I currently use Quadro M3000M from Dell with original vBIOS in my M980NU and it needs only modified .inf for proper operation. GTX 970M and 980M also works, however it looks like there is a some kind of power limit around 75W:

I can't believe I didn't pick up on that sooner after reading multiple threads about laptop installs online over the last couple days. I was trying to find working modified drivers instead of creating my own. Turns out it's not really that hard anyway. It's all good and seems to be working. Still have to do some testing and temp readings before I can sign off on it. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again @poprostujakub.

 

My scores are nothing to brag about in Firestrike Extreme or Timespy. But the temps are great! LM keeps it nice and cool.

Firestrike Extreme it topped out at 64 F
Timespy it topped out at 62 F.

So definitely a successful GPU transplant at last to replace the dual SLI 285M's. Learned a lot from so many here reading through threads, so thanks to all of you.
