I am looking to swap out/replace a Intel Core Duo T2500 2.0GHz on the Asus W3J to a C2D processor...is that possible and how much do they generally run for? Midrange processor wise and will the difference be noticeable? Thanks

you will need to get >= T7200 to have a benchmark increase. To notice any difference you will need to get a T7600, and the diff is not going to be big...

So it would be a waste of ~$500 if i were to upgrade since the performance will only be increased slightly?

I am in the same situation as you. I am upgrading for 64bit. Performance should, but not by much.

Pretty much, yeah. You should probably look into a faster drive, faster or more memory instead. Those will affect your performance much more positively. If it's games that are slowing down, you are almost certainly bottlenecked by your video chip. Turn the settings down, or look into a new machine entirely.

I'd make double sure they are pin compatible. Didnt Intel change from 478 to 479 pins not long ago?
-
Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are, with a few minor exceptions for certain versions of the 945 express chipset, pin and chipset compatible.

Core 2 Duo is a pop-in upgrade from Core Duo. You might not even need a BIOS refresh.
The Core 2 Duo T7200, which is the most cost-efficient notebook processor, will cost you about $315. Lower powered budget Core 2 Duo's will cost you maybe $100 less.
A notice - if you upgrade your processor you void your warranty. Also don't forget to buy Arctic Silver 5 if you're going through with your processor purchase.
