Ok folks my girlfriends laptop has just given up the ghost. I've traced the fault down to the motherboard. Rather than ditching the lappy I'm gonna replace the motherboard and possibly upgrade the cpu while in surgury. So i'm just wondering what is the quickest CPU I can drop into this lappy without any Bios flashing or general mucking around with the system.

I know you can do it as I have seen a Turion 64 1.6ghz on the same mother board as mine (Part No. 394253)

Also can other motherboard/CPU combinations fit into the Compaq M2000 shell??

Any of the single core Turion64 ML or maybe even the MT series processors should be a direct replacement and pretty much you only options when it coems to upgrading the cpu.

HP offered the same series with Intel pentium M/Celeron M cpu's. So the respective Intel MB's should fit. Notebook MB's are specific to a model so not much options when it comes to replacing these.

Does you know for certain if the MT series Cpu would go in?

No,not with certainity. But I have seen similar systems Like the Compaq V2000 being upgradable to the MT series. Basically the only difference between the ML and MT is that the MT's run at a lower voltage resulting in lower heat output and power consumption. So, most BIOS should accept the MT cpu's.

Ok thanks.....so the MB wouldn't overvolt the MT CPU?

Not necessarily. It depends on the BIOS (also chipset) support as well.

No and even if it did you can control it using software like RM Clock, Crystal CPUID or NHC which allow you set custom voltage(VID) settings for the cpu.

I have the same model laptop and it died about 6 months ago. I also think that it was the motherboard in my case. Since it stopped working, my computer has been gathering dust on my shelf.

Reading your post has made me wonder if it is worth me trying to fix it. How much do you think it will cost you to replace the motherboard, and how did you go about getting the replacement?

its worth doing. I bought replacement motherboard for $138 on ebay and an turion ml-34 cpu for $18. Replaced both parts today and laptop is as good as new with small but noticable gains in speed and battery life :) The only thing I may have done different is to source a Turion MT series cpu. Not 100% sure if these would work but I can't see why not?

What is the motherboard model number you used? Could I just pull the cpu out from my old computer and do it?
