So my girlfriend has an HP dv1049cl notebook. She recently had a hand injury and needs to use speech recognition software whilst it heals.
She could just buy a new notebook if she needs to. However the speech recognition software already runs close to acceptable, just a little laggy and annoying.
I already tracked down some free ram and have it maxed out at 2GB. The current processor is a Pentium m 710 which runs on the i855GM/GME chipset and is a socket 479 setup at 90nm and has a 400mhz FSB. The BIOS version is currently F.08(circa 2004/2005).
I want to upgrade to a Pentium m 765. Will this work? It is a 90nm chip obviously and also a 478 pin socket 479 setup with the 400mhz speed(fastest chip at 400) It is part of the same chip series and the BIOS is the same, but I need a newer version (F.23 I believe? Where can I get this?)
Also, does anyone have experience with the dv1000 notebook line? How much crap am I going to have to take apart to get in there? Hopefully it is doable because $170 for a new CPU that will make this baby limp for another year would be a great deal instead of sinking 2K into a top of the line new one. I'd rather have her wait for the Penryn line to drop that kind of $$.
Thanks!

There shouldnt be any issues with the upgrade to the PM 765. I believe HP topped out at 745/755 before updating the series. You would have to disassemble th laptopto access the cpu. Fortunately HP has detailed service manuals explaining the steps...

The BIOS should be available at HP's website. Just enter your product/model number and it should list the latest updates...
