Hello,
I've got a Samsung Laptop with a CPU witch not support 64 bits virtualization (intel-VYx) so I would like to replace CPU by another one who support intel-VTx
The specs are the followings:
- Laptop: Samsung NP-R620-FS07FR
- CPU: Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo P7350
- Socket: P (478)
- CPU flags: MMX, SSE (1-2-3-4.1), SSSE3, EM64T, NX
- MotherBoard: Samsung R520/R522/R620
- NorthBridge: Intel PM45
I thought replacing the CPU by another from same P7000 family who supports Intel VT techno-X (64-bit virtualization) to maximize compatibility MB / CPU:

(Penultimate column indicates Intel VTx support)
But I've a big doubt with the bios, in the current config nothing permit me to enable or disable the VT-X, so how I can activate virtualization support with the new CPU ?
And second question: Can I replace my CPU with one that is not P7000 family ?
Thanks a lot for your help and sorry for my bad english, I'm French user![]()

First of all you gotta get the socket right. You gotta stay with the 478 socket core2duo processors. I wouldnt know about VT-X. But i think you can get one with or without it it doesnt matter. I´d advise you to get something in the T9xxx range, a T9400 or a T9600

If your MoBo doesnt support VTX your options are very limited. The P7450 is ofcourse better but not worth replacing imo for the .13GHz extra. The P7450 seems to be the best socket 478 non VT-x processor.
But if it does you got a lot of other option. I found this article about the subject:
If the CPU supports VT-x, does the mobo need to support it as well? - [H]ard|Forum
VT-x is a feature so it wouldnt necesaraly be vital to the cpu compablity. -
I have a slightly different model NP-R620-FS02UK with a T6500. A used T9500 or similar could now be picked up quite cheaply so I'm considering an upgrade just worried about compatability...
Thanks for any feedback! -

Appreciate the processor difference may not be that significant but the cost is pretty minimal, and I will probably enjoy having a tinker as well. After a bit of digging I found another R620 variant that seemed to ship with a T9600 (in Hungary?!) so think I shoud be okay compatibility wise.
Next on the list would be stepping up the ram... currently at 3GB plus 0.5GB graphics on a 32 bit system but I see there is a PAU patch that lets the system access more so may look into that.
edit- after checking the PAU route doesn't look ideal but it does seem I should be able to move from windows 8 32bit to 64bit (I thought this needed a complete new copy but seems the key is okay and it's just about getting hold of the right install media).
Background - Having got a new laptop (Asus Taichi) for everyday use, the old Samsung - which usefully has a blu-ray drive - is permanently hooked up to the TV as home theatre and occasional gaming system.

Just to post the result for record.
Upgrade to T9600 (bought for about £25) went well and worked without a hitch. Laptop was a bit more difficult to take apart than I anticipated but got there in the end. Thought I may have damaged the touch pad but a bit of jigging the connector about got it working again.
System appears to be limited to 4gb so haven't bothered with a ram upgrade, though I did switch to Windows 8 64bit, running okay with 3gb to be honest.
What I have done is added an external gpu connected via the expresscard slot. I used an EXP-GDC-6.0 and an EVGA GTX550ti 2gb. Connection and setup was actually really easy.
So overall happy with my upgrades and should keep this laptop going for a few more years...
Cheers
