Hey all, I do not know a lot about computers but I am looking to upgrade my CPU. Right now I have a P7350, and was wondering if my motherboard would support a quad core, and if not, would it support pretty much any P-socket dual cores? My motherboard specs are as follows:

    Manufacturer: Pegatron Corp.
    Model: G60vx 1.0
    Chipset: Intel PM45 Rev. 07
    Southbridge: Intel 8280 1IM (ICH9-M)

    BIOS
    American Megatrends
    Ver. 202

My laptop is model G51vx and mobo G60vx, I did not buy it from best buy, I received the notebook straight from ASUS. What I really want to upgrade to is the QX9300, Q9100 or Q9000. Will any of these work with my motherboard?

Any 1066 FSB Core 2 Duo. Some people have managed to get Core 2 Quad's in there.

Ok cool thanks!!! So the QX9300 or Q9100 could potentially work then? Because they are 1066 FSB and core 2 quads? otherwise I think I'll probably go for T9900.

Your BIOS may whitelist Core 2 Quads, or not support it but there are people who did manage to get Core 2 Quad (maybe ES/QS chips).

Your best bet without spending an arm and a leg is like a P8700 or like a T9400. Those are around ~100-120 on Fleabay.

Actually, I have one more question. The laptop had the option to come with a Q9000 core 2 quad when it was ordered, does that mean that it may indeed support a quad core such as the Q9000 or Qx9300?

Both are 45 watt TDP processors so the cooling system should be able to handle it. Now if you do a crazy overclock, probably not or you would need to modify the cooling system.

Your notebook came with a Core 2 Duo, so I think your only option is the best Core 2 Duo = T9900, maybe a X9100.

Quad Core CPU's WILL NOT work in a Best Buy Asus G51/60.

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Forum- Asus G60vx + quad core?

The fastest option is the T9900. I wouldn't get a an Extreme edition Core 2 Duo, it will out put a bit more heat.

    The best CPU option's(IMO) are:

    35 Watt Chips:

    T9900
    T9800
    T9600
    T9550
    T9400

    25 Watt Chips:

    P9700
    P9600
    P9500
    P8800
    P8700

Ok, but like I said earlier my notebook is NOT the best buy model, I ordered and received it straight from ASUS here in Canada, so would a Quad core work with my notebook?

So let me get this straight: Quad Core's will not work in the G60V(X-RBBX05). That seems pretty straightforward. But you're also proclaiming that they will not work in the G51VX-RX05 (which bears similar specs to and the same mother board as the G60V). Is that correct?

    Edit: Reference Purposes

Exact model is G51vx and motherboard G60vx, there is nothing following it anywhere that I can find. The computer had the option of coming with the Q9000 which makes me think it will support a Core 2 quad, at least that one. I literally got this computer mailed to me from ASUS, so its not the one from Best Buy

GenTechPC originally commented on this saying ASUS would not have used two different motherboards. However when the owner of a Best Buy G51 tried a QX9300 and could not use it he then shipped the CPU to GenTechPC where it was confirmed that it worked in reseller models at least ones that were available with the quad.

He stated there is definitely a difference. He tried the best buy versions bios and it did not change the support for the quad, its in the motherboard.

Ok, I just opened up my notebook, and I noticed that it says A01 G60vx on the motherboard. I did some researching, and apparently this version of the motherboard supports quad cores, anyone else help confirm this?

That seems to settle it then. Thanks. It would seem to me, a waste of resources, to produce two different motherboards purely for the purpose of deprecating one. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Trust me everyone was surprised. Its known that the chipset in the G50 also supports Quads but the G50 doesn't. I am not sure what they do to achieve the incompatibility outside of the bios. But it seems as it does exist for select models of G51 and G60.
