Hi, I have a Dell D520, with the Celeron M 430 @1.73 GHz 533, I upgraded the CPU to a Core Duo T2400, 1.83Ghz 667 FSB but when i try to turn the laptop on, nothing is displayed on the screen, I hear the hardrive kick on, i see the LED power light, light up, i hear the CD drive Spin up to see if there is anything in the drive, but that is where it stops. The screen will stay black, and i can not get past this. If i put in the old CPU it will boot up no problems..
I am waiting for the other CPU a T5600. I bought 2, a T2400 and a T5600.
What should i do, and how do i get this to work? Thanks!
I have the I943/940GML..
Could you close the other thread, i think it might get more responses out here.
Updated BIOS to A08, also everything is seated correctly.
The seller says it should work, Dell says it should work,(Waited 4.5 Hrs to hear that) these forums, Yahoo forums, and google search says this should work... Thanks.

Even right here, they said Up to T2400 for the Core Duo, also Up to T7200 for the Core Duo 2.

Did you update your BIOS to the latest version? And could it be the display? Did you have to disconnect a cable running from your screen to your motherboard, and if so did you forget to reconnect it?
-
You could have been sold a faulty CPU, if your machine supports it, and the bios is updated to the latest version, and the machine works with your original CPU, then this may be the problem.
Do you know anyone who has a laptop you can test the CPU on??? -
Is the RAM still compatable when upgrading to 667mhz FSB processor or does it matter?
-
just called dell, and they tell me that the there are 4 different Core Duo's that will work, and only One, Core Duo 2 will work....
So only,
Core Duo T2300 1666 2048 667
Core Duo T2400 1833 2048 667
Core Duo T2500 2000 2048 667
Core Duo T2600 2166 2048 667
Or
Core 2 Duo T7200 2000 4096 667
Is this right?
I have the T2400... and its not working. I also bought a T5600 and it will be here monday... Will that also not work?
Talking to online dell support, they say
11/29/2009 08:49:53PM Agent (CEBg_Apollo_88772): "Thank you for patiently waiting."
11/29/2009 08:50:32PM Agent (CEBg_Apollo_88772): "Based on the specs of both processors you are planning to upgrade, they are technically the same."
11/29/2009 08:52:00PM Agent (CEBg_Apollo_88772): "The only difference that they have is that the Intel Core 2 Duo consumes less energy."
11/29/2009 08:52:02PM ME: "Really? So either one would drop in, no problems? What one would you recommend, The T5600 or T2400"
11/29/2009 08:53:59PM ME: "Hum, alright then."
11/29/2009 08:54:47PM Agent (CEBg_Apollo_88772): "Go for the Core 2 Duo T5600 and technically this should work with your system as well."
Ahhhhhh so what should i do?
thanks...

Get a T7200, user TrelaraH will sell you one. Send a PM.

Does the backlight of the screen light up? If not, you may have accidentally disconnected the cable.
-
Would the HDD and optical drive spinup if it wasn't passing post because of the CPU or RAM?
-
Ah so i guess i have the 940GML........ Really.
I took the laptop apart again, to take a look at the north bridge....
and to my horror, i read, QG82940GML.
So. How is this? I have 2.5GB of ram installed... the system properties only reads 1.99GB...
But CPU-Z reads DIMM A 2048 667 DIMM B 512 533, and reads 2560MB as size, so it is being read, but i thought that the 940GML only ready 2GB?
So i am returning the T2400, and the T5600 will be here Monday.. That most likely will not work, and i will also return that chip..
So, What CPU will work with this 940GML, and be a upgrade over the Celeron 430? -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
So this suggests that D520s shipped with the 940 or 943 depending on what processor you chose... I can't believe Dell would do that, but I kind of had that sneaking suspicion when you first started having problems.
At any rate, with the 940, I do remember some people having success with Pentium Dual-Cores, despite PDCs not being officially supported on the 940, but don't quote me on that... it was a long time ago that anyone discussed the 940.
Officially, you have your choice of these blisteringly fast Core... Solos

Yeah, i'm slightly disappointed with my 940GML Board....
I can not find any T14,T15,or T1600's on Ebay..
I bought a T1350, but i dont even know if that will be a upgrade over the Celeron M.
I dont care at this point. I am done trying to upgrade this thing.
I cant win with it.
When the C2D arrives on monday, i will again take the laptop apart, and put that chip in, just to see..
Thanks again for the replies. -
so, i got the T5600, and it does not work with this low quality motherboard..
so that is also getting shipped back..
Now just waiting for the Slow T1350...
This thing is not upgradable at all. -
If you really need the performance that a CPU upgrade would provide, perhaps it's time for a new laptop altogether...
-
new laptop is the way!
-
New laptop is not worth it right now, but when i have extra cash some time next year, then i will look for a new or new-used laptop.
I got the processor, installed it, and it works!! The whole system seems slightly snappier. I think it was worth the upgrade.....for $10.
The temp likes to fluctuate fast tho, is that normal?
this was with the Celeron,
and this is with the new CPU.
I did not get crazy with the thermal paste. -
So i took a shot in the dark, and i bought another CPU for it, This one, a Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2390 @ 1.867 Ghz. I searched and found a some other members also had a I940 Board, one i remember was a T2080. (1.73Ghz.) on a Toshiba. So i will let you know....http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLA4H From Wiki.

This is really entertaining! I'm enjoying reading your progress, please let us know how it works out!
-
So. I got the T2390 in the mail... Took the laptop apart, and it would not even fit.. Its Socket P.
haha. I wanted to buy the T2080.. that is Socket M.. So now i have a T2390 For sale on ebay. And now am going to buy a T2080, and give that a try... What happened is i got the numbers messed up, and with out even thinking, went for the T2390 when i really wanted the T2080.
-
u should really save urself money and hassle and buy a new quad core laptop... no problems with vista...
-
-
because it is so slow... compared to windows 7...

I too believed this for a few months, but this shows otherwise (although I still prefer Win 7):
See XP vs. Vista vs. Win 7 for desktops:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-7-performance,2476.html
See: XP vs. Vista vs. Win 7 for notebooks:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-7-notebook,2485.html
Basically, XP is still the fastest (but who cares in 2010!), Win 7 is better than Vista on desktops and a little better than Vista on notebooks, Win 7 gives the best battery life of any modern O/S (Windows, of course) so far.
Cheers! -
Ah, the difference is, i only use it for online forums, Youtube, Hulu, AIM, Windows Mail, Google earth, and a few other programs. For what I do, Windows Vista is fine, and runs decent as is. I never had a program freeze, and can watch 720P youtube videos no problem.. Thats all i ask of this laptop. lol. as of right now, unless this cpu upgrade works, then i will ask just a little more out of it.. I am a Very happy vista user.. I just like the new feel over XP. XP even with the Royal Black theme was feeling old..

Have to agree that Vista with SP2 is very, very good.
Make that Vista the x64 bit version and it even hits great!
Even Vista with SP1 was fine on a lot of systems (x64 version), but Win 7 really is the O/S to tackle 2010 with. -
also OC the CPU is a bit using SetFSB.... should increase performance by a bit...
-
Update:
I received the T2080... put it in, and the laptop does not boot.....
so, all in all, i have found out you really can not upgrade a 940GML board..
CPU Upgrade... help....
