So an Alienware Aurora desktop that just arrived was supposed to come equipped with an overclocked cpu. When I go into system preferences and check the specs it says the i7 is running at 2.8ghz when I ordered it to run overclocked at 3.36.

Does this mean that the cpu just isn't overclocked or will I have do I have to download and install some third party software in order to verify it?

You need to download a third party tool. Windows doesn't always show the actual speed.

    Try CPU-Z

is the OP confusing overclocking with turboboost, failing to understand either?

No i think Maxgeek is correct. When I overclock my CPU windows never reports it but CPU-z does.

IDK how you missed it, but this is called laptopreview.com(NBR). That means its for laptops ONLY. You obviously have a desktop, check out http://www.desktopreview.com/

Thanks The Joker I must've missed that... The reason I posted is because I'm pretty sure the problem I am describing could happen to both a laptop and a desktop.

Newsposter - No, I'm not mixing the two up. I ordered it OC'd to 3.36.

Windows reported my Phenom running at 3.3ghz when its oc'd to 3.6 so CPU-Z is a more accurate idea of your real ghz

Ok thats no problem, lots of people accidentally post desktop stuff here.

Sorry if I sounded rude in my 1st post :)

But like others have said, download and run CPU-Z and tell us what it reports.

Yeah, Windows probably reports based on what the CPU says it's supposed to be running at, without checking the actual clockspeed. You need CPU-Z or a similar program.

Yeah Windows only reports the maximum factory clock, i don't think Alienware would chince out on a simple matter of overclocking CPU's...

Thanks for all the input guys, I ended up talking to an Alienware tech support guy before downloading CPU-Z and he showed me the overclock speed in the BIOS.
