Hi all, I've added another lap to my ever growing collection, this one a Presario R3000 - it seems to run mostly at 701MHZ (on AC and DC) except for the SIW and CPUZ reports, which both show it maxing at 797MHZ. It was advertised as 1.7GHZ so it appears to be stuck at half speed for some reason... Other than a dead DVD player and spent battery it seems to be in pretty nice shape - I've managed to track down and fix the failing touchpad and wireless problems but I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting the slow cpu speed and hope for help here!

There is no info at all on the cpu in the bios, which is weird isn't isn't it?

    Any suggestions out there? :)

Weinter thank you for the help and the link. I don't have windows 7, it is the original XP o/s so I do not have any installation problems. I tried to find a similar problem/solution but for Athlon 64 with XP on the same site, all I can find is this but one solution says a full hard drive is causing the problem (mine is not even half full) and the other suggests turning off "Cool & Quiet" in the bios - but there is no such feature/option in this bios.

When I search add/remove programs there is option to remove Athlon 64 processor driver version AMD 1.1.0.0 - do you think this can be the problem? Is this what should be replaced with the amdk8 driver they speak of in the Windows 7 thread you linked for me or is it already that driver since it is XP on here to begin with?

What will happen if I remove that driver? Will the laptop stop booting altogether? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I'm new to laptops lol!

thanks again for your help :)

I have one of these at home too, but I've never run into this issue. I remember I used NHC (Notebook Hardware Control) to control the processor, which is the same as yours, at times. The only time the frequency dropped to ~800 was when the laptop was severely overheating, but I doubt that is the issue with yours.

Finally googled up a working solution and thought I'd share the one that worked for mine in case it happens to another noob with this laptop (Presarrio R3000) running XP....

Start > Control Panel > Power Option > Power Schemes tab, Power schemes drop down box - in it is a slew of schemes, the Laptop/Portable, Battery Max and others limit the processor whether or not you plug into AC, you have to manually change it each time if you want to run at full speed when plugged in.

The funniest part was I found the answer on a Mac forum of all places lmao!
