The last thing I did on the laptop was remove the cpu from its socket, and put it right back in. It has purple thermal compound, did I ruin the ther compound and that's why its getting so hot?

So you just re-used the old thermal compound?
Is there a chance that you might have put finger oil the top of the CPU?
You probably just need to apply new thermal compound. -
jackluo923 Notebook Virtuoso
Thermal compounds are suppose to be a single use product.

I just lifted the chip, took it out, and put it back in.
My temp1 temperature is: 52 C
core temperature is: 59 C
This is right at boot. Everything else has a checkmark on it, but those two have a fire icon on speedfan -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
What are your load temps? I doubt you ruined the thermal compound. If I recall correctly, SpeedFan automatically puts a little fire symbol next to anything above 50C. I'm fairly certain that you can change that setting somewhere if you want...

I think I fixed it.. the heatsink was a TINY TINY bit off the chip. Placed it back perfectly and temps dropped quite a bit
-
That was one high temperature, be careful next time when it comes to detaching laptop components, even a slight static can mess electronic gadgets up. Congratulations on the successful recovery of your laptop my friend.
-
why did you lift it up ? .. just to see how it goes off the socket ?
-
Yeah I'm a curious kind of a guy. While it did drop my temps by a bit, the laptop is still BOILING compared to what it used to be. It always used to be cool to the touch
any ideas anyone?
-
Reapply the thermal past with fresh one. It is the best what you can do.
Guess the temps will drop even lower than you had before. -
well you should post your laptop model at least, so people with similar machines can eventually suggest a solution.
speaking from my experience, your laptop may use the keypad as an extention to the heatsink (like mine does), .. and you may have forgot to put the pad that sits between the keyboard and the heatsink, and therefore decrease the cooling abilities.
or you may have displaced the fan and/or it's touching something that is preventing it from turning into full speed
or .. lots of other reasons that I'm too lazy to list right now -
Well the laptop is a Toshiba portege M200. The keyboard isn't an extension to the heatsink, and the fan is working I believe. I did move the heatsink as well though...

Always, always , always replace the thermal compound anytime you remove the heatsink.
CPU temps spike like crazy?
