Your Packard Bell uses the AMD turion X2 line of processors which use socket S1
You can upgrade your processor to any of the TL dual core line of processors from AMD. I have seen one with a TL-60 in it, but you should be able to upgrade the cpu all of the way up to the TL-68 at 2.4Ghz. The TL-68 is the fastest AMD processor for your system.
If you have a TL-60 now you may not notice that much of a performance gain to going to the TL-68.
If you have a ML single core processor, you would notice a big upgrade in performance.

The graphics card is an nVidia 7000, which is integrated, and thus not upgradeable.
The harddrive is upgradeable. It uses a standard 9.5mm thick SATA type harddrive, and you can upgrade to any sata drive other than the Hitachi 5k500 drive (only because it is 12.5mm thick).

    Your system can support a maximum of 4Gb of Pc5300 memory. (2 x 2Gb)

For the optical drive, there are many solutions you can get.
First I would advise cleaning the lens on your current optical drive, with a q-tip lighty dipped in rubbing alcohol. Slowly and gently swirl the tip on the lens, cleaning any dirt/dust from the lens. Than hopefully that fixes the drive. More than likely your lens is dirty causing it to not read or work, so try cleaning it before buying a new one.

If your laptop uses a standard optical drive like many laptops do, you can upgrade to say a Pioneer DVR-K16 or DVR-K17 for tray loading, or the DVR-K06 for slot loading.
Panasonic, Sony and TSST (toshiba samsung storage tech) make optical drives
