Ok, so I am a little confused by the information provided in the compatibility guide.

It says that the CPU I have is a socket M

The cpu I want is a socket P

However, when I go to the intel website it says that both would fit in the same socket. Hence my confusion.

I am looking to upgrade from T5550 to T7800. Or any other CPU that is faster.
The only other one I can think would be the T9500. Which has a 6mb cache.

    My Search

    IntelĀ® Core?2 Duo Processor T9500 (6M Cache, 2.60 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) with SPEC Code(s) SLAPW, SLAQH, SLAYX, SLAZA, SLB3BW, SLB49, SLB4A, SLB4B

i have a gm965 chipset and recently updated my bios.

    Thanks

Ok my mistake I actually have the socket P T5550.

Can someone please tell me which CPU would enable the gm965 to work at full capacity.

Um, the T5550 is socket P, as is the T7800 and T9500. Are you maybe thinking of the T5500? The T5500 is socket M.

Edit - The GM965 should probably support any socket P C2D of 800 MHz FSB or less, so the T9500 is the highest you could probably go.

T9500 and the X9000 are your best options. The T9300 is also very good and has the best price/performance ratio.

Yea, the T9300 seems like the one I will end up purchasing.

Does it make a difference if it is used?

I can always check the output using the intel processor utility after right?

Also, does anyone know where the cpu is on the toshiba satellite u405 model? Will I have to the keyboard out?

Is this a difficult process, I know its not beginner stuff but if I am careful should I have any issues?

Any advice for someone attempting to do this for the first time?

    Thanks

Check out this link for dissambling your Toshiba u405

Just take your time and pay attention to where the screws go and you will be fine. My emachine is like your Toshiba you have to dissemble the whole machine to get to the CPU. I can do it in about 20mins from start to finish now but I've had it apart several times. I think the first time was 45mins but I didn't use a tutorial.
