Does anyone know if the Compaq Presario v3000 series Notebook can have it's CPU upgraded to a Dual Core Turion X2? The Notebook currently has a single core Turion MK-36 installed.

If so can anyone suggest where to find Notebook Processors, I am having real trouble locating them.

    Thanks.

You should be able to. According to Wikipedia, both CPUs use the 638 pin AMD Socket S1. It should be a simple slot in fit.

What about cooling for an X2?

The Compaq V3000 is sold with a Turion X2 as an option; of course it can cool it.

If you already have an MK-36, you may want to stick with that though. It will be faster than the X2 in single-threaded applications, except for the TL-60 which runs at the same clockspeed.

I am only ever planning on having XP Home on my machine, so would you say that my existing CPU would perform better in general XP Home use than a 1.6ghz Turion X2?

I don't think a CPU upgrade is worth it period, especially if you are only doing regular tasks. The MK-36 has plenty of power.

Ok then thankyou for you help. Giving the matter some more thought I think it perhaps is not really needed.

If you want better overall performance, consider getting a 7200RPM hard drive. It will improve/shorten:
    -Boot-up times
    -Program loading times
    -Data transfer speeds

Your laptop is more than powerful enough as it is though. I'd say you don't need to spend any more money.

Thanks. I did not really want to have to part with anymore coin. The most intensive app. I will ever run will be Office 2007.

nah...there's no need for a CPU upgrade. If you want to make your notebook faster, get a RAM or HDD upgrade.
