am wanting to upgrade the cpu in my hp 550 currently is a celeron 550 2GHZ processor am wanting to put in a C2D can anyone help with which ones will work if any ??
laptop has a intel GL960 chipset
-
From what I have researched, it can only support processors with a 533Mhz FSB and Socket Ps.
From what I can see, I think the best you can put in it is either a Celeron 570 running at 2.26Ghz or a Celeron Dual-Core T1700 running at 1.83Mhz.
The dual core should have better performance. -
thanks for that am sure i have heard of people puttin C2D in them how much of a power increase will each one of those be??
-
GL960 supports any socket P CPU with FSB of up to 800MHz. However, some users have reported problems with the graphics core after switching for t7xxx series. At the same time, when I swapped t2330 for t7250 on mine (it had GL960 too), I had no problems whatsoever.
BTW, welcome to NBR! -
Me too,
I had a Celeron 520 on mine, and swaped to C2D T7500. Every thing working fine. Os triple boot...
Even some people was able to put T9500 on GL960. The Max FSB is 800Mhz.
Check this out...

brilliant thanks guys so which processor do you recomend that i go for to get the best results???
-
so do you think i will have problems after i change processor with my standard graphics card?
will i also have to update my bios before attepting to install CPu?
jus had a look at system information and it mentions express chipset 965 this is good isnt it ? -
1. well, that's a question of your budget. Even with a t7xxx series you'll see a nice bump in performance and battery life.
2. That depends, some systems do require a BIOS update, some not. I'm pretty sure you won't need it if going for Meroms, not sure about Penryns though
3. 965 Express Family includes P965, GM965 and GL960 -
Yes, he's right. It's all the question of your money.
And your bios. If no one have an upgrade experience to T9xxx series on your laptop, go to T7xxx series.
If you can find someone who succeded to install a T9xxx, go to the T9xxx (more efficient, more and better cache)
Don't forget to take a look on "old" extreme cpu like X7800 and X7900, they can be quite efficient too, are ez oc'able , and give you a real big boost to your old austin...
By example T7800 (2,6ghz), T9500 (2,6ghz) and X7900 (2,8ghz) are almost in the same prices on second hand market.
Good luck, Sky walker -
cheers guys just installed some ram on the laptop i now have 3gb tryed 4gb but it would not load up
will my performance be ok if i go for C2D 2.16ghz ?? -
Hmm......the OP said that he had a GL960 chipset which from what I can see only supports 533Mhz FSB while the GL965 can support 533Mhz or 800Mhz.....am I just being stupid and overlooking something?

It depend what you do.
But just to make Vista usable, i mean surf on internet, word processor, watch movies and so on, it's completly enought.
You will quickly forget your celeron -
-
2.16 C2D will make you happy, i'm sure))) -
http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/gl960/gl960-overview.htm
BUT, we are quite numerous to have installed succefully an 800Mhz FSB cpu on our laptop, and I was one of the first to trie it on acer 5315, I can say you by the fact "In this case, Intel lies"
GL960 can run at 800Mhz fsb -
Or just read/watched/heard/saw someone who heard that he think what will perhap do??? -
Also, I forgot to mention that it takes 667MHz RAM as well, again, opposed to what is written on Intel's page -
so all i got t do now is find somewhere to get a processor from !!!!
