From what I have researched, it can only support processors with a 533Mhz FSB and Socket Ps.

From what I can see, I think the best you can put in it is either a Celeron 570 running at 2.26Ghz or a Celeron Dual-Core T1700 running at 1.83Mhz.

The dual core should have better performance.

GL960 supports any socket P CPU with FSB of up to 800MHz. However, some users have reported problems with the graphics core after switching for t7xxx series. At the same time, when I swapped t2330 for t7250 on mine (it had GL960 too), I had no problems whatsoever.

    BTW, welcome to NBR!

    1. well, that's a question of your budget. Even with a t7xxx series you'll see a nice bump in performance and battery life.
    2. That depends, some systems do require a BIOS update, some not. I'm pretty sure you won't need it if going for Meroms, not sure about Penryns though
    3. 965 Express Family includes P965, GM965 and GL960

Yes, he's right. It's all the question of your money.
And your bios. If no one have an upgrade experience to T9xxx series on your laptop, go to T7xxx series.
If you can find someone who succeded to install a T9xxx, go to the T9xxx (more efficient, more and better cache)

Don't forget to take a look on "old" extreme cpu like X7800 and X7900, they can be quite efficient too, are ez oc'able , and give you a real big boost to your old austin...

By example T7800 (2,6ghz), T9500 (2,6ghz) and X7900 (2,8ghz) are almost in the same prices on second hand market.

    Good luck, Sky walker ;)

Hmm......the OP said that he had a GL960 chipset which from what I can see only supports 533Mhz FSB while the GL965 can support 533Mhz or 800Mhz.....am I just being stupid and overlooking something?

there is no such chip as GL965 =))) you confuse it with GM965. The most notable difference between GL960 and GM965 is that the graphics core runs at 400MHz and 500MHz respectively

Stick to 3Gb, it should be enough for you, your OS will not use more than 3 anyway if it's not x64.

2.16 C2D will make you happy, i'm sure)))

It's perhaps write something like that on Intel's datasheets and website.
    http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/gl960/gl960-overview.htm

BUT, we are quite numerous to have installed succefully an 800Mhz FSB cpu on our laptop, and I was one of the first to trie it on acer 5315, I can say you by the fact "In this case, Intel lies" ;)
GL960 can run at 800Mhz fsb

i wouldn't trust that page))) real-life experience proves it wrong)

Also, I forgot to mention that it takes 667MHz RAM as well, again, opposed to what is written on Intel's page
