    Hi,

I know that for the money I'm spending (also attempting an LCD panel upgrade to 1080p) I could just sell my current laptop and buy a new one but I like the whole upgrading thing. It's an expensive and mundane cure for boredom :D

My current Dell n5010 has an i3 380M which ideally I want to swap out for an i7 720QM however I'm unaware as to whether a 45nm CPU will work with my motherboard as the 380M is 32nm, Also the power requirement for the 720QM is 45w as opposed to the 380M's 35w. But I really want quad-core

Failing that, which I'm assuming I have simply because of the power requirements, an i7 640M is my last resort, it shares the same power requirement of 35w and is 32nm so hopefully that should be compatible right?

    All help appreciated people :)

The silver edition of the N5010 houses Clarksfield i7's, though it is a different motherboard. The cooling system of the N5010 IMO is barely enough to cool an i3/i5, not to mention a 45 watt Clarksfield quad core. I would just get a i5-560M as Arrandale i7s only offer slightly higher out of the box clock speeds, slightly more cache and higher turbo, but IMO not worth it.

So you're saying i5 is a better upgrade option as the i7 isn't much more bang for my buck so to speak?

    Looking into it :)
