I have a Gateway MX3311b laptop equipped with a Sempron 3200+ Socket S1 processor. My intention was to upgrade the processor to a Turion X2 TL-50 Socket S1 processor. The motherboard of my laptop is the same as the motherboard of the laptop with this processor (MX3410), and I have updated to the latest bios, which is the same for both my laptop and the factory dual core model. The motherboard part number is:
4001189R Motherboard w/NVIDIA C51MV w/o 1394 (FRU)
And further details can be found here:

So I have installed the Turion X2 TL-50 into the laptop, and after the BIOS POST has completed, the message 'Fatal error !!! Please change CPU !!!' comes on screen. It is possible to go into the bios, where the processor is identified correctly, and it is not a Windows error as I have tried it with the hard drive removed, where it still does the same.
It could be a faulty processor, as it was purchased second hand from eBay, but I'm hoping I can find a way to sort it out without having to replace the CPU.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Phil

It could be faulty, did you check to see if all the pins were straight?
Also, check for a BIOS update if you haven't already done so. -
Pins were all straight, and I've got the latest BIOS. Would it let you go into BIOS if the CPU was faulty?

Could be that the heatsink isn't seated properly. Might need to go back in and fiddle with the heatsink adjustment screws, could be too tight? Could be overheating from not being seated properly.
-
I would agree, but firstly surely it would take longer than a couple of seconds to overheat, and secondly it always displays the error directly after POST. I'll try adjusting the screws, but I'm pretty sure the die is in full contact with the heatsink.

Right, it must be down to the CPU or an incompatibility (although I doubt this), I swapped the original Sempron back in and it booted fine, then the Turion again, same error, and now I've built it back up with the Sempron and it's working. I'll message the seller and keep you informed. Thanks for the help anyway.

A while back when switching my CPU on one of my other laptops, even with the new CPU installed, Windows kept seeing it as a different processor. I would have suggested trying to boot into Windows Safe mode and then going to Device manager and deleting or uninstalling the Processor and then having windows rescan and reload again. Once I did this, Windows started reporting the correct processor. I hope this helps. God Bless

Thanks for your comment, however unfortunately it doesn't get that far. It isn't a Windows error as the error comes up even with the hard drive removed.

Can you flash the BIOS to the one from the computer with the X2?
-
Thought of that already, they both run the exact same BIOS. Same motherboard, same RAM, same HDD, in fact they're exactly identical except the CPU. Hence why I'm baffled!

probably faulty CPU like you said.
Can you get your money back? -
CPU seems to work or else you would not even POST. Sounds like the BIOS is doing a check and allowing certain CPU's only.
-
Yeah, more than likely the CPU. However, being a fiddler myself, I'd take out the RAM, seat them back in one at a time and see if that changes anything.. Probably not going to do anything but at least it's something to try while the ebay guy gets back to you.

I second the ram idea.
Are the processors rated to run at the same wattage?
CPU upgrade not gone as expected
