    I decided to go ahead and put in the new CPU in my Toshiba A305-S5872. I took it apart, cleaned the heat sink and fan (boy was it dirty) and installed the new chip. When it powered on, the new drivers installed and it's working great. And, boy, is it quiet. My problem is with the fan. I downloaded programs to check the temp and it's staying normal (below 50 degrees Celsius), but the fan isn't kicking in. I tried downloading SpeedFan, CPUID HWMonitor and AIDA64, but none of them showed my fan (at all). When I go into BIOS, there's no hardware section for the fan. I checked and the driver for the fan is working properly. The fan kicks in for a second or two when I first boot up, but never comes on. But, like I said, the temp stays normal and even goes down while I was watching the different monitors. For different reasons, I ended up taking the laptop apart three times when I installed the new chip and I really don't want to have to keep taking it apart (and risk damaging something). Is this normal for the fan to not run if the temp is staying normal?

    Run Prime95 to beat the ca@p out of the CPU and tell us what happens. Run the stress test in Prime95.

    Hmmm, question....is this a program that might damage the CPU if the fan ISN'T working properly. I've been SO careful through this whole process trying not to damage my laptop. Or, is this a program that shuts down the laptop if it 'over-stresses' it?

    JUST DO IT ALREADY for first 10 seconds! If temps go high while fan doesn't start then turn program off.

    If you are watching temps, you can easily stop it before damage is done. Fire Prime95 up and see what happens. My guess is that all is fine and you did a good job.

    I'm in agreement with the other posters; it's probably fine unless you physically broke something, which you probably would have noticed.

    You probably increased the cooling system's efficiency a lot by cleaning it out, reapplying thermal grease and so on - that might be why the fan is staying off.

    These guys know...

    CAUTION::::
    WHAT FOLLOWS BELOW IS FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY AND NOT MEANT AS AN EVERYDAY TEST

    your new CPU draws less power which means less heat. if you really wanna test your fans functionality then load up those fan and temp monitoring programs. i like RMCLOCK because old habits die hard. next cover the laptop with a blanket so it gets no airflow and is insulated, DO NOT LEAVE UNATTENDED.... now watch as temps rise and the fan kicks on when the preset temp thresholds are crossed.

    the reason it never comes on now is it never gets hotter than the temperature thresholds the factory set in the BIOS.

    maybe updating the BIOS would have different temp settings for each different processor, (but not likely)
