A couple of years ago my CPU ran idle at around 40 celcius. Now it idles around 60 and when I play Dragon Age (not at full settings) it jumps to 87. I just cleaned my fans so that shouldn't be the problem. Could it be that the thermal paste is just dried up and not being as effective?

That very well could be. I have my Toshiba open right now putting thermal paste on it for this same reason (not the gaming, the idling temps).

What are you using Arctic Silver 5? What's the best one available for my laptop? (Specs in sig)
-
Most people just use AS5 though. -
-
I also recommend MX-3 instead of AS5 for exactly the same reasons.

usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
Or Diamond IC7.

IC-7 isn't electrically conductive?

SomeFormOFhuman has the dumbest username.
ICD7 is non-conductive. MX3 is pretty good as well. Very close to ICD7 performance, well as I tested both. Are your heatsinks secured properly to the CPU as well? Sometimes a loose screw at one of the 4 corners can cause the issue as the contacting copper is not fully in touch with the core of the CPU.

u might also want to blow some compressed air in ur fans to remove dust or clean the dust from ur fans when u open up ur laptops...
-
MX-2 and IC Diamond 7. -
ICD-7 and MX-3 ... AS5 is old... and really not that good...
CPU very hot
