I have 2 laptops and CPUz Both reports the core speed at a little less than half the max clock of the CPU.

One is a Toshiba A305 with an Intel T2050 1.6ghz (CPUz showing 796mhz) and the other is a Dell M6300 with an Intel T9300 2.5ghz (Reported at 1196mhz).

    Any Ideas?

You are either on power saver mode, or your doing nothing with your laptop and Intel Speedstep has kicked in.

Kind OT but with CPU on my intel SU9300 under idle I actually get a faster clock speed @ 1.6ghz. Even when I am not plug in and I'm under power saving mode. Maybe both are issue could be because CPU-Z is reporting the wrong speed?

Must be because I'm not doing anything. the Toshiba went to 1596.0 mhz while wPrime was running.

NExt ? real quick, why can I only select one core to view the info? the little "Selection" Box is greyed out

^^Probably has a higher FSB and therefore higher idle frequency.

^Dunno, the selection box doesn't work for me as well..

It means you only need that much speed to do whatever you do on your laptops. It's normal, CPUs cut down speed to consume less power when the speed isn't required.

Then why is that when I am doing nothing or just using Firefox, or Chrome it oc's the cpu for me?

What is 'it' and what exactly do you mean by the above quote? Please include numbers for clarity.

are you using RMclock? if you see on CPUZ, the core speed jumping when you load something, it's normal too. the CPU increases speed when loading, then goes back down after it's loaded.

No, I am not using RMclock, even when I am not plug in, and just idle its still running at a higher speed. Sometimes, I just want it to be at or lower than clock speed, if CPU-Z is accurate, to save battery. This on the Intel SU9300.
