I'm still very curious about the performance of the 7K320. All I have seen are synthetic benchmarks and Hitachi usually excels at real life benchmarks.

My request is to run PC Mark Vantage (Vista) (or PC Mark 05 (XP)). These programs are free and will deliver numbers that we can compare to drives like Hitachi 7K200 and WD 3200BEKT. Then we will know what the fastest mobile harddisk at the moment is.

Technically PCMark is still a synthetic benchmark but since it simulates normal windows usage it's result say more then synthetic benchmarks like HDTune or HDTach.

    Thanks in advance.

    * Edit: Just found the PC Mark 05 results (XP)results. Still looking for Vantage results.
7K320 on the left, 7K200 on the right.

phil, are those the same drive, cause the performance difference is rather large?

I am probably going to buy a 7k320 in a few weeks, around mid august, but thats in a long time, so by then my results may not be as helpful.

Oops forgot to say, those are the 7K320 vs. 7K200 (on the right)

It would be nice if 3200BEKT or 7200.3 users could run PCMark too.

I ll ask one of my mates who bought a WD3200BEKT 2 days back....He has got vista installed, so I hope he has PC Mark Vantage as well.. :D

And I came across this yesterday, when I was looking for BIOS mods.. :D

Thanks for your help Angad. Vantage is not really necessary, I already have two results for 3200BEKT. What would be really interesting is PCMark 05 on the 3200BEKT.

PCMark Vantage for 7K320 and Seagate 7200.3 would be interesting too.

Here's a Vantage result for 3200BEKT, and here is another one.

Am I reading this right? Accorging to those results, the 7k200 is faster. Or am I mistaken?

7K320 is fastest in 4 of the 5 benchmarks, 7K200 in one (app. loading).

Overall the results are quite close, expect for the file writing performance which is a lot better on the 7K320.

I just finished installing my WD 3200BEKT and am transferring files/tweaking as I type. I ran HD tune on my previous Hitachi 200gig 7200 drive prior to the swap so I can post the results of both (as soon as I run it on the drive) for anyone to see if it is worth it. I needed the extra capacity so for me I think it will be worth it.

Thanks for offering. There have been a couple of people posting their HDTune results for both drives already, so for me it's not necessary. But i would like to see PCMark05 results for your WD drive, then we can compare it to 7K320.

    Results we have now:
    Drive- Vantage - PCMark
    7K320- wanted - have
    7200.3- wanted - wanted
WD BS - have - wanted

Great work Andy. That shows the 7K320 is actually a bit faster than the WD.

How many background processes were running with the PC Mark05 result of the WD3200BEKT? What are the specifications of that system?

The tests were on my system.... :p
I had been using the WD3200BEKT for a week....in my system.. :p (33-35 processes), with antivirus and other applications closed....

The 7K320 is installed in my other laptop, and I had cloned the WD3200BEVT onto it..(which I am going to ship today)....sold the notebook for $1480.. :p (D630, X9000ES, 3GB ram, 7K320 :p)

    WD3200BEKT - 40 idle
    7K320 - 44 idle - But i can't be so sure, since I had modified the D630 quite alot....
But the WD is pretty cool and quiet..!!

Yeah i think you are right, this is what they say in reviews too.

So 7K320 the fastest but a bit noisy.
3200BEKT a bit slower but cool & quiet.

    Here's some discussion about 7K320 vibration/noise: link1 link2.

    7K320 is a good drive....
If I buy another notebook soon, I'll try out the Seagate as well....!!
I had the momentus 7200.2 200GB, which was pretty fast..!! (Slower than the 7K200, I owned)

LMAO, I wasn't dual booting at that time, else would have done the PCMark05 tests in XP too.... :p

If I would have had a warranty for the WD3200BEVT, I would have sold that with the D630, and kept the 7K320 with me :(....

So it seems like the 7k320 is the winner?
Phil, do we have a 7K200 pc mark, we can compare with the new generation 7200rpm drives, so we can see how much faster it is with bootup, and app loading and such.
It looks like the old 7K200 did oughly 8.5mb/sec on startup and the new one does 9.5mb/sec or so.

I am still debating getting a 7k200 or 7K320 for my system.
I want to upgrade the raid 0 array in my big laptop from two 7k200 to two 7k320's but I dont think the upgrade is going to be very noticeable.

Here's benchmark data for the Hitachi 7K320 running on Sony VAIO FW (2.53Ghz T9400, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3470, Vista Home Premium SP1):

Here are PCMark05 HDD Test Suite results:
    HDD - XP Startup 9.53 MB/s
    HDD - Application Loading 7.84 MB/s
    HDD - General Usage 6.69 MB/s
    HDD - Virus Scan 85.71 MB/s
    HDD - File Write 61.03 MB/s

Here are PCMark Vantage HDD Test Suite results:
    HDD 1 - Windows Defender 15.75 MB/s
    HDD 2 - gaming 10.32 MB/s
HDD 3 - importing pictures to Windows Photo Gallery 36.49 MB/s
    HDD 4 - Windows Vista startup 14.89 MB/s
HDD 5 - video editing using Windows Movie Maker 32.9 MB/s
    HDD 6 - Windows Media Center 86.01 MB/s
HDD 7 - adding music to Windows Media Player 8.46 MB/s
    HDD 8 - application loading 3.64 MB/s

Phil: Looks like Western Digital Scorpio Black 320 is faster than Hitachi 7K320 in most tests (dramatic exceptions are tests 3 & 6 where 7K320 smokes WD).

Very interesting, but it seems like your scores a lot lower than what Andy has posted. For example your acces time in HDTune is way too high for a 7K320. I am thinking you have a lot of background processes running. If you haven't done this yet: Try terminating as many processes as possible. Virus scanners, wifi etc.

Your PCMark and Vantage seem to be influenced as wel. If you compare your scores to Andy's PCMark and Vantage results you'll see his are a lot better. This may be because of the background processes or the Vista performance settings that he posted.

I am looking forward to hear if you can improve your scores.

How are the noise, vibration and heat TetonWolf?

I just got my 7K320. I don't run Windows (but Vista is installed on this machine), so what should I download to run some tests of my own for you guys? It does appear snappier in Linux than the 7K200 that replaced it, but I haven't run any tests (other than "hdparm -t") to verify this. As far as I'm concerned, this was a worthwhile purchase.

    I have a CTO HP dv9700, 2.5GHz T9300, 4GB, 64-bit Vista.

You could install PC Mark Vantage in Vista and then post the results here.
    Download: http://www.futuremark.com/download/pcmarkvantage/

One time it runs for free. I think it would make sense to apply the performance settings Andy posted before (on top of this page).

Yup, it's the Sony bloatware. I turned off antivirus, windows siderbar, etc. I'll make a better effort tonight. As for access time, yes I was surprised by that....I tried to turn off acoustic management using Hitachi Featues tool but it doesn't work. I think that my be why the number is high. I used SiSandra filesystem benchmark and got 9ms access time though!! :)

The drive is quiet, cool, and no vibration. Certainly no worse than the Toshiba 320 5400 it replaced.

If only I had a clean Vista install....

All HDDs were tested on the same system, same H/W config.
For PCMark05, I enabled Classic Mode, and for Vantage, I did not enable Classic Mode, as it used to give a warning, that it won't perform benchies properly. Though I always disabled all the startup items and non-microsoft services.
(Except Kaspersky, which was a bit stubborn, so I had to disable/terminate it)

Problem is that Vista x64 probably influences the results, in which case we'll have no comparison results.

So if you don't really feel like running Vantage I suggest not doing it.

Please let me know if you get some stuff working that I didn't get to work, such as:

    - Function keys
    - Media buttons
    - Card reader
    - Touchpad (it works, but with the default windows driver, so no scrolling function etc.)

    Thanks
