I am planning on updating my Acer Aspire 5553g's BIOS with a modified BIOS from this link here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...ix-bios-bios-mod-request-111.html#post6956468

I have read that the best way to install BIOS is in DOS, and that is also what the creator of this new BIOS says to do. So, I would be doing this with my flashdrive after moving the USB port to the top of the boot list.

Now, in case something goes horribly wrong, I would like to backup my current BIOS (1.23), or the oldest BIOS (1.18) to the same flashdrive so I can reflash those or recover the newest before the failed update. Is this possible? Is it just a matter or command's in DOS that would guide whether I am installing something or recovering something?

I hope to experiment with booting Linux from the same USB flashdrive. Can I do all of these three things at once?

What programs/solutions would you all recommend for preventing/fixing BIOS flashing failure?

Usually BIOS flashing utilities allow you to backup your current BIOS, just a different command. All depends on the BIOS brand and utility. As far as a BIOS flash failure, again, it all depends on the laptop, and many times you have to do it blindly and hope for the best, if the system even boots.
