I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S2194 laptop with a 1.73 Ghz Intel Celeron M 430 with socket 479 mPGA , i want to upgrade to a Pentium M http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=sl77P but am not quite sure if its compatable since its a 3.06 Ghz, and if i would need to buy a new fan/heatsink for my laptop since the Pentium M Thermal Design Power is 70 w and the celeron is only 27 W. what heatsink/fan would any of you recommend if i do indeed need to replace it?

    Motherboard - ATI
    Model - SB450 Rev0.4b
    Chipset - ATi RS400/RC400/RC410
    Southbridge - SB400
with BIOS: Phoenix Technologies LTD 5.60 09/30/2008

any help regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated :)

*also i use my laptop as a desktop pretty much since its always plugged in and i hardly ever ever move it but thx ronnieb :)

*thx soo much everyone :D i almost bought that cpu off ebay just the other night but since im really really not good at this kind of stuff i thought id seek help from profesionals. If anyone could help me find a decent cpu maybe 2ghz and up, that would work with my laptop and any heatsinks/fans i would possibly need . i'd be forever thankful :) i do lots of gaming on this laptop aswell, i know its not the best out there but so far it exceeds my expectations sumtimes so a lil boost in performance would be rlly great :) last thing to upgrade on here is the cpu, ive upgraded to the max ram 2gb and 7200rpm HDD so only thing else i can think of to boost performance is the cpu. thx in advance :D

*heres more info from cpu z if this can help :)

Do not upgrade to the pentium 4 line up, as your battery life will get raped.

Stick with the Pentium M series

    TO OP:

Pentium M and "Mobile Pentium 4" is not the same thing..

    Pentium M is these

    http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/chart/pentium_m.htm

    Mobile Pentium 4 is these

    http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/chart/mobile_pentium4.htm

Nevertheless, I dont know how, or why you would upgrade the processor.

I just got a refurbished off-lease dell laptop from "dell financial services" for $250 shipped.

    It had Pentium M 1.6GHz 512MB ram, 40gb HD and a dvd/cd-rom.

It actually has amazing battery life, I got as much as 3 1/2 hours out of it!!

So I would suggest buying a new one, or looking for deals on old ones like I got.

Although if your components are all ok otherwise, and you feel a Pentium M processor will handle your work, then for the $20 or $30 the cpu costs its probably worth doing.

Btw according to cpubenchmark.net the pentium M line does not really perform any better in their tests then the celeron M line, although I dont know what kind of tests they run..

Folks, the Celeron 430 is a Socket M processor. You can't put Pentium 4 or Pentium M chips in there. I'm not too sure about the ATI chipset he's got there, but I'd venture it's full-featured enough to take Socket M Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors up through the T7600.

You definitely cant upgrade to a 3.06Ghz Pentium 4 desktop mobile chip
    Its a completely different socket
Pentium M's also will not fit cause his laptop is a socket M laptop

You should be able to upgrade to a socket M core duo or a core 2 duo.
I dont know what the ATi chipset can do though.
You should be fine with all core duo's up to the T2700, but I dont know if a core 2 duo will work

OP, please disregard posts 2-4, they are false.

Sorry, thought it was a 479 at first.

Should be ok up to the T2450 in that case, I had a A135 (same Radeon 200M chipset), would not accept the 667 FSB processors.

Actually, that may not be totally correct. I didn't realize that different versions of the A105 have different chipsets (what a crappy naming scheme). There IS even a version (albeit not the one OP has) that has a Pentium M motherboard. ComputerMD82 may be right in that he can only go up to the T2450.

The A105-S2xxx have Radeon 200m Chipsets while the A105-S4xxx have Intel 945GM chipsets.

If I'm not mistaken it's limited to 533mhz FSB chips.

i've been comparing between my celeron M toshiba and my pentium M toshiba, and the difference is huge in day to day computing. The pentium has way better performance and battery life.

I can verify that the T2450 works in the A105-S2194. As that is what I am running in mine. Swapped it out, it booted up with a new option in the bios to enable or disable dynamic speed. I am running Bios version 5.60 which is the latest version I've found on the Toshiba site. As a side note, my wife has a A105-S2236 which uses exactly the same bios file and it has a Celeron 520 which has the EM64T support. So, should theoretically be possible to run a Core 2 Duo up to maybe the T5300. As far as the bus speed, I chose to play it safe and stick with a processor that is 533Mhz and figured the Core Duo at 2Ghz would be better for me than the Core 2 Duo at 1.73Ghz.

    My machine:
    A105-S2194
    T2450 Core Duo @ 2GHz
    2Gb Ram
    500Gb Hard Drive
