With 2GB sticks being very affordable nowadays, is it possible for me to just buy one stick and put it in my AMD Turion X2 system? Or must I buy 2 1GB sticks?

Second question: Does AMD Turion X2 support 4GB? (I'm guessing that it won't)

Sure...why not? Most systems these days are capable of supporting memory upto 4GB. A good deal of compatibility also depends on the BIOS as well. What make/brand is the laptop you are looking to upgrade?

AFAIK it is the chipset you should be asking about if it could support 4Gb of ram not the processor. The processor will use whatever ram the mainboard has.

But as miner said what brand/notebook are you referring to?

The laptop is a COMPAQ V6000z. How can I find out which chipset it uses?

The chipset doesnt matter in AMD systems since the memory controller is located on the cpu. The Turion X2 should definately support memory upto 4GB. I have seen a couple of people with dv2000z with 4GB RAM and also one member in the forums has upgraded to 3GB(serch the HP/Compaq forums). So, the V6000z shouldnt be any different. As long as the BIOS supports 4GB memory you should be fine.

BTW, all consumer AMD based HP systems use the Nvidia Nforce 430/6150 chipset.

Also, HP has 4GB as an option on the Turion X2-powered dv9000z (which shares the same BIOS with the dv6000z).

I plan to put 3GB in my new lappy when I get it (still in production).

Beat me to it. Im not familar with the moble versions but I know the sandeigo/venice cores on the desktop platforms are ok, but the older ones than that would be kinda iffy.

San Diego and Venice were the "updated" single-core K8s, with a much improved memory controller. Clawhammer and Newcastle were the older cores which were much more picky about ram size & speed. I was never able to get my Newcastle 3800+ to run 2GB at DDR400 speeds (it always dumped back to 333 at anything over 1GB).

Yeah I still run an opteron 148 Venice @ 2.8ghz 24/7 it has served me well but it may be retired for the intel quad core at the end of july if I can pony up enough for a mobo and cpu and ram.

Then down the road try to pick up a new gpu and I'll be set for a hope a good 2 years.

Miner, I have the same Compaq V3019US as you. Is it possible to fill the 2 DIMM slots with 2gb RAM each for a total of 4gb? I'm really looking to upgrade. Also, I need 200 pin correct?
