I have an Alienware m15x with a 8600m gt in it. I want to upgrade with out spending $450 on a 9800m GT or $400 for an HD3650. The HD 3650, 9600m, and 9650m cards sell on eBay for under $140. I also found an HD 4570 for under $130. Does anyone know if theres a good chance these cards will work? I can't find anyone thats done it before. The socket type is the same as the 8600m.

    HD 4570: ATI HD 4500 4570 M92 XT DDR3 256M MXM II Vedio VGA Card - eBay (item 120577637414 end time Jul-01-10 02:07:57 PDT)

HD 3650: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 MXM II Graphics Card 512MB - eBay (item 260591426074 end time Jul-23-10 00:31:18 PDT)

9600m: nVidia GeForce 9600M GT 512MB DDR3 MXM II VGA Card - eBay (item 270574969832 end time Jul-05-10 02:16:56 PDT)

9650m: nVidia GeForce 9650 M GT 1GB MXM II Graphics Card - eBay (item 260597462061 end time Jul-04-10 01:01:31 PDT)

the current consumption is for all the cards is under 50 watts. So power shouldn't be an issue.

    Thanks

    Maybe check this site? :)

    MXM Upgrade Home Page

Just send a email to them if you need too, and you should get a response back pretty quick.

Hit the "About Us" tab, there's a big bold e-mail address right there in the middle. I'll repeat it here for convenience: Info@[email protected]. Obviously, remove the extra at@

I think 3870 cards sell for around $200.
Maybe start a new WTB thread.

Hm. Actually, looking at their page for the m15x, it lists it as a Type IV, and that someone tried mounting a GTX280M... with working, although highly stressed results. Here are the pages if you want some details ( MXM notebooks before 3.0 and Alienware m15x upgrade guide).
