My laptop has a ---
SL7EG, Pentium M 725, 1.60GHz, FSB 400 MHz, Socket type= 479 mPGA\Micro-FCPGA
(My chipset can support up too a FSB of 533 MHz)
Would I be able to swap it for a -
Pentium 4 M, 3.33GHz, FSB 533 MHz, Package type=478 pin
Or a -
Pentium Duel core M T2130, 1.86GHz, FSB 533 MHz, Package type=Micro-FCPGA
Or a -
Pentium M 780, 2.26GHz, FSB 533 MHz, Package type=Micro-FCPGA
Or -
What ever you suggest would be the Fastest performing processor I can swap for? Any help would be thankful.

At the very least, no P4 or dual core processor will work. You need a Pentium M that has a 400MHz FSB, and that is all that will work. 725, 735, 745, and 755, AFAIK, would be compatible. I wouldn't think upgrading would really help you though. You'll have to find out about the 533MHz P-Ms, though I suspect their pin outs are different and hence would not work.

On the acer website for the aspire series 1690 the system bus speed is rated at 533 MHz. Why would I have to stay with a 400 MHz bus speed?

Wait, check this out:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=209284
These are your upgrade options, at most:
Pentium M
(Dothan core)
Pentium M 735
Pentium M 745
Pentium M 755
Pentium M 765
Pentium M 730
Pentium M 740
Pentium M 750
Pentium M 760
Pentium M 770
Pentium M 780
So yes, the 780 would work. I'd have to question if the upgrade would actually help you though, since the tech is so old. You might be better off upgrading the RAM or the hard drive, which would yield better performance increases. -
Ah excellent that explains it perfectly. Thanks for all the great help and for the quick replies! You should be awarded a medal for your great moderator work! -I'll pass the word on

Good points Greg! Why throw good money after bad? The RAM and HDD at least have the chance of being portable. When all is said and done likely so close to buying new and getting better. So why do?
-
Yup...ram and hdd are cheaper and have a bigger effect. Luck OP has a 533mhz mobo...mine is 400mhz
You can pin-mod it...and make the 725 run at 2GHz...
-
Very true indeed, the Hard drive would probably be the best bet as I am already maxed out at 2gigs. Ah the wall of proprietary upgrades thwarts me again!
-
I am in the same situation...i upgraded to a 7200rpm hdd
runs like a dream
-
Yeah that does sound pretty sweet right now.... I do a lot of audio editing with this box so anything towards faster performance has just got to happen. Is that pin modding even really plausible? I have read a little but not a lot.
-
Well its been done many times before, and in fact i read a thread on NBR where someone did it with a 725 and the sonoma (i think) chipset.
-
Excellent I'll check in on that. Thanks for the input!

Damn that sounds fun! or it could be a big headache as in all overclocking experiments but with all the damn encoding and effects processing I do why not? Its my my girlfriends laptop anyways so I'll just tell her it makes myspace go 10x faster! Ha jk that sounded evil but I am sure she wont mind me trying! Well thanks for the all the help again and if you don't hear from me soon... just wait longer I'm probably booting up my old 1000 MHz destop to look up new laptop prices! Ha Cheers!

LOL! hehe. its ok. I wish i can do the pin mod...
Can I swap my pentium m 725 with one of these?
