It is currently the retail 100GB Seagate Momentus 5400.2, 8MB. I haven't bought or replaced a HDD before, nevermind a laptop HDD - what am I looking for to know that it is compatible?

Can the Ferrari HDD even be replaced? Easily?

I have no idea where to find this sort of information - the user guide that comes with the system is useless, containing the most general information ever. The thing only tells me that it's a 100GB hard drive... everything else I want to know about it and its upgradeability I have to find on my own. So I turn to NBR! :)

Okay so far what I have found is that I'll need a 2.5" HDD (for notebooks) with ATA connection. I don't think the Ferrari 4005WLMi does SATA? I'm looking for a 7200 RPM drive (currently 5400 in my system).

What do you folks think about these from TD: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2344&Nav=|c:1277|&Sort=3&Recs=10

    Any suggestions/recommendations? THANKS!

The Ferrari 4005 doesn't have a SATA connection, no, it's standard ATA-100, and it can be upgraded.

The biggest 7200RPM drive is 100GB. I'd recommend a Hitachi drive.

The Hitachi's probably the fastest one eh, especially at 100GB. Are the Seagate TravelStars any good at 7200?

I hear Segate HD's run cooler but Hitachi's give a tiny extra perfomace boost. Its up to you what you want - less heat vs marginal performance gain. Personally i would go with the Segate.

True; either way, you're probably not going to notice a difference between the Hitachi and the Seagate. I prefer the Hitachi simply because they have been making the 7200RPM laptop drives the longest.

Any specific model recommendations, or places to buy from? I'm not familiar with the prices on these.

So I'm checking out newegg.com at the moment. The ATA-6 compatible is what I want right?

My HDD is easily accessible at the bottom of my laptop. Is the replacement as simple as taking the drive out and putting the new one in, and connecting the cable(s)? Is there any software configuration or is it plug 'n play style autodetection?

I'm looking at the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 and the Seagate Momentus 7200.1, both ATA-6, 100GB, 7200 RPM now. Can I get confirmation that those 2 are cool for my system?

Are these rumblings about the Hitachi being a bit noisy true, or just blabber? THANKS!

BAH newegg.com doesn't ship to Canada... weak! Are there any Canadian stores will prices comparable to newegg?

There's no cables to connect - you'll see how it is done when you open yours up. ATA-6, yes, that is what you need. ATA-7 is SATA.

Newegg.com does not ship to Canada by the way - try NCIX.com.
