I should be receiving my new laptop this week (a Dell XPS 1330) and was wondering if it would be possible to take out one of the 1GB sticks of RAM and replace it with a single 2GB stick to give me a total of 3GB RAM?
Or, would I have to replace both 1GB sticks with two 2GB sticks to give me 4GB RAM?

You should be able to replace one of the 1gb sticks for a 2gb stick of RAM.
-
You can. Keep in mind that if you put in 4 gigs, it will only all be recognized by windows if you're running Vista 64bit. If you have 32 bit vista, then only a little over 3 gigs will be recognized.

3GB's will work fine. Lots of people on NBR are doing.

actually vista sees about 3.6 gb's.. total minus whatever your gpu etc is using... but if you go with a full 4gb the video card and whatever else needs ram will get all it needs then still leave vista with its 3+gb just fyi.. i spoke with microsoft today about this to get a better answer.. they said no technically the 32bit will not "see" it all but it will still get utilized by things like gpu's that are shared ram or dedicated that use extra ram.. at least thats what i got from microsoft tech dept supervisor

i believe XP sees only 3.3GB

whhoooppp, can' wait to upgrade my RAM

Dug this one up, nice avatar I am sure the bunny is just tired and yawning nothing more, right?
-
Just a thought - with Vista 64bit, would it pose a whole lot of other problems like programs not working, battery life, drivers incompatible and stuff like that just for the sake of it recognising the 4Gig? And the fact to go out and buy the 64bit variant. I've got Vista Business 32bit at the moment

You can get the drivers for 64 bit Vista. It should not be a big deal. For the record Windows 32 bit will address 4GB's. It will not see any RAM beyound what it has left after it adresses components.
Can I upgrade from 2GB RAM to 4GB RAM?
